On the Detroit series
I didn’t expect to have meetings with players at this moment. But we got beat. We got schooled. We got schooled by a very good playoff team and they schooled us from top to bottom, and it’s something we have to deal with here going forward. We got beat.
On losing Toni Lydman to injury
Losing Toni Lydman in this series really hurt more than you guys will ever know. He could play against two great players. He knew how to play against Datsyuk and Zetterberg. That was a big blow to us. They beat us. We have to get better.
On what changes need to be made
As I’m standing here today, I’m telling you it won’t be the same team next year. We made a lot of good steps, we’ve got a lot of good kids, but it will not be the same next year. I promise you that. It’s not good enough. It’s not good enough.
On Selanne, Koivu
I’ve talked to Saku a little bit and will attempt to move forward. I would like him back. Teemu, he’ll go away and play golf for a while, I’ll wait a while and go hit a few [golf] balls one day and then I’ll go play with him and let him beat me. And then we’ll decide if he wants to play again. So far that’s worked, so we’ll try that again. Teemu has to have time. Teemu is the type of person who needs time away. I’ve always respected that because of who he is. Nothing is going to change. He’s needs to go away, and I’ll give him his space. But I’m sure he knows this year is going to be quicker. All of a sudden we’re in the middle of May already, and the Draft is June 30th and then we’re into July. It’s going to go fast. But I’ll let him go play golf for a while and I’ll let him beat me and go from there.
On Selanne’s play
Things were going really well before [Nick Bonino’s injury], and we scraped it by after. We held it together very well after, but Teemu missed Nick. I didn’t have a replacement. I couldn’t find something.
On Selanne’s skill level now
It’s still there. His speed is still there. This was a hard season for an older guy. For an older player, this season was really rough, and we’ve had to force him to take time off. With a short season and the older you get, this is tough. It’s not fair to say ‘Is it gone?’ or not. I still saw some spurts there in the playoffs that were pretty good.
Nick [Bonino] tore his hamstring playing soccer down the hallway. We’ve got a few injuries. Toni [Lydman] isn’t right. He’s not right. Beauch [Francois Beauchemin] is going to have surgery. He has an ACL that happened a while back. We just met. He’s going to have surgery. He promises me he’ll be ready by the start of the year, and I don’t argue with Beauch. If he says he’ll be ready, he’ll be ready.
Getzy [Ryan Getzlaf] had a bad ankle that didn’t get better. We tried to give him rest, but there’s no time to give him rest. That didn’t get better.
If he can get it done tomorrow, he’ll get it done tomorrow. He’ll get it done quick. He tells me he’s playing at the start of next year, so I’m not arguing. Beauch never makes a big thing of anything. He just plays. Beauch never complains.
On pending free agents
I will attempt Saku quickly. I’ve talked to Ben [Lovejoy] and we’ll see where that goes. Next year is a tough year salary cap-wise, because we’re dropping down to 64.3, so we’re going to have to pay attention to that. There are no slam dunks, trust me.
On making trades
Lots of things are possible. Again, it won’t be the same team. I haven’t gotten far enough in my thinking. I’ve got to get myself away for a little while and get my game plan with my guys. I’ll get input from our coaching staff and my guys and I will figure out where we’re going.
On attending the World Championships
It’s too late. I wish I could. Gibby [John Gibson] is there and he’s playing really well there. There aren’t a lot of free agents there this year, either. I thought there was a free agent I could go and get there right now, but I’ve had two people there. The indication is there is no free agent for me right there, right now. I think I should take some time and meet with some people here, coaches first, and veterans next week, and figure out where we’re going.
