Debuted by First Round Draft Pick Shea Theodore Today in New Jersey, 20th Anniversary Patch
Will Adorn Third Jersey as Part of Season-Long Celebration of Ducks Hockey
ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Anaheim Ducks unveiled the National Hockey League (NHL) club’s 20th anniversary logo at today’s 2013 NHL Entry Draft in Newark, New Jersey (Prudential Center). First-round selection (26th overall) Shea Theodore was presented the club’s third jersey, which includes the 20th anniversary patch on the sweater’s right shoulder. The introduction of the logo kicks off the club’s season-long celebration of 20 seasons of Ducks hockey.
Born as a franchise on Dec. 10, 1992, the club was officially introduced as the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Mar. 1, 1993. The Ducks competed in their first regular season contest on Oct. 8, 1993 vs. Detroit at Honda Center (formerly Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim) and secured its first franchise win on Oct. 13, 1993 vs. Edmonton (4-3). With a classic-looking number “20” as the focal point, the logo serves owners Henry and Susan Samueli’s vision to celebrate 20 years of Ducks hockey all season long.
As part of the 20th anniversary celebrations, the 2013-14 regular season will include a number of special events at Honda Center. Planned occasions will include look backs at great moments in Ducks history and retro merchandise available for purchase. In addition, the club will host a “Throwback Night” near the start of the 2013-14 regular season, paying homage to the inaugural 1993-94 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim season. The club will have further announcements surrounding the festivities at a later date.
In 2007, the Ducks (in their 14th NHL year) became the first California team to win the Stanley Cup. The club went 16-5 during the 2007 run in capturing hockey’s ultimate prize. Over the last 20 years, the Anaheim Ducks have also appeared in three Conference Final series (2003, 2006 & 2007), won two Pacific Division titles (2007 & 2013) and have advanced to the Stanley Cup Playoffs on nine occasions (1997, 1999, 2003, 2006-09, 2011, 2013). On June 20, 2005, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim were purchased from the Walt Disney Company by Henry and Susan Samueli. One year later on June 22, 2006, the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim transformed into the Anaheim Ducks and assumed not only a new name, but also a new logo and color palette of black and metallic gold with orange accents.
