The Ducks selected five players at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft today at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. In addition to first-round pick Shea Theodore (26th overall) earlier today, the club selected right wing Nick Sorensen (second round, 45th overall), defenseman Keaton Thompson (third round, 87th overall), right wing Grant Besse (fifth round, 147th overall), and center Miro Aaltonen (sixth round, 177th overall).
“We look for guys who we are passionate about as a staff, and Shea was the first one on our list,” said Ducks Director of Amateur Scouting Martin Madden. “We love the way he thinks the game, his mobility and his ability to bring offense from the point on the power play. Overall, we believe we got good players and value in the spots we selected from tonight.”
Sorensen, 18 (10/23/94), scored 20-27=47 points with a +10 rating and 18 PIM in 46 games with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) last season. Sorensen ranked third among team leaders in points-per-game (1.02), tied for fourth in goals and fifth in scoring. Among league rookies, he finished tied for eighth in scoring, tied for seventh in goals and tied for ninth in assists. The 6-0, 168-pound winger added 7-3=10 points in eight QMJHL Playoff games, leading the Ramparts in goals and ranking tied for second in scoring. The Holback, Denmark native made his QMJHL debut in 2010-11, earning 5-4=9 points with a +9 rating and eight PIM in eight games.
Thompson, 17 (9/14/95), collected 4-15=19 points with a +13 rating and 34 PIM in 63 games with the United States Under-18 Development Program (NTDP) last season. Among team defensemen, Thompson finished second in scoring and assists, and third in goals. The 6-0, 187-pound blueliner has spent two seasons in the program, earning 9-32=41 points with 71 PIM in 117 career games. A native of Edina, MN, Thompson ranked second among Under-17 team defensemen is goals (5), assists (17) and points (22) in 2011-12. He is scheduled to attend the University of North Dakota of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) in the fall.
Besse, 18 (7/14/94), appeared in 25 contests with Benilde-St. Margaret’s Catholic Prep (St. Louis Park, MN) in 2012-13, earning 44-25=69 points with 16 PIM. The 5-9, 170-pound winger is set to attend the University of Wisconsin (WCHA) next season with Ducks 2012 second-round selection Nicolas Kerdiles. A native of Edina, MN, Besse was bestowed with the 2013 Minnesota Mr. Hockey award this past season as the top senior player in Minnesota prep hockey. He helped Benilde-St. Margaret’s capture the 2012 Minnesota State hockey championship, setting a state tournament record by scoring all five of the Red Knights’ goals (three of them short-handed) in their 5-1 victory over Hill-Murray (St. Paul, MN) on Mar. 11, 2012.
Aaltonen, 20 (6/7/93), scored 11-5=16 points with 22 PIM in 32 games last season with the Espoo Blues of the Finnish Elite League. The native of Joensuu, Finland represented his country at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording 2-1=3 points with a +2 rating in one game before suffering an ankle injury that caused him to miss the remainder of the tournament. The 5-10, 168-pound center made his Finnish Elite League debut with Espoo in 2011-12, collecting 1-1=2 points with two PIM in 26 games.
