Ducks Defeat Coyotes, 3-2

Andy McDonald scored two goals, Teemu Selanne had a goal and two assists and JS Giguere stopped 34 shots as the Ducks beat the Phoenix Coyotes 3-2 on Sunday night.

Anaheim extended their unbeaten streak at the Arrowhead Pond to five games with the victory.  The Ducks’ only home defeat of the season came in their opening night loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

“You have to have success at home and good teams do that,” said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle.

“We’re trying to create an environment here where it’s awfully difficult for teams to come in and have success.”

The Coyotes would have success early in the contest when Geoff Sanderson (3, Comrie, Ballard) scored on the power play at 8:58 of the first period.  The Ducks would take the deficit into the locker room after the first 20 minutes of play.

Selanne (9, Fedoruk) would even the contest at 4:54 of the second period by taking a feed from Todd Fedoruk on the right wing and firing a slap shot past Phoenix goaltender David LeNeveu.  For Selanne, it was his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

“When you’re hot, you’re hot, but the most important thing is that we’re winning and of course you want to be a big part of it,” said Selanne.

McDonald (4, Selanne, Salei), the game’s number one star, would give the Ducks the lead with 45 seconds remaining in the second period.  It started with a great individual effort by Selanne, fighting off a Phoenix defender and getting a shot on LeNevue.  McDonald would clean up the rebound for his fourth goal of the season.

“The new rules should allow a guy like Andy McDonald to excel,” said Carlyle.

“He’s a dynamic player who is very exciting to watch. He’s getting things to go his way after being frustrated early. He’s getting an opportunity to play with Selanne and those guys and they seem to have a little something going.”

Former Duck Mike Leclerc (5, Devereaux, Nash) would even the game just 42 seconds into the third period.

McDonald (5, Selanne, Sykora), however, would strike back for the Ducks at 3:01 of the third with the eventual game-winner on the power play.  McDonald has scored five goals in his last five games.

“You try and go on the positives when things are going well for you. You don’t try to change too many things,” said McDonald.

“Right now we’re on a winning streak and that’s the most important thing, to continue to do those things to help our team win.”

The Mighty Ducks look to extend their home unbeaten streak to six games on Tuesday night when Paul Kariya and the Nashville Predators come to town.  (Click here to purchase tickets.)
