Transcript from Q&A with Brian Burke

I always enjoy having question and answer sessions from the Fans. I hope to see more of these in the future. Thank you for participating.  - Brian Burke, EVP and General Manager

George - San Diego, CA: Can you please explain how injuries have affected the ability to obtain players in light of the salary cap?

Brian Burke: What injuries do is eat up your cap reserve. Most teams leave a million to a million and a half in cap reserve, and it has proven inadequate. So close to a dozen teams are dangerously close to their cap.

Luke - Halifax, NS: Do you have anything lined up yet for the new room you have under the cap or are you waiting until the end of the season.

Brian Burke: We're going to start looking at alternatives immediately. But we will spend when something comes along that we think makes sense.

Mario Ramirez - Corona, CA: With the trade of Sergei Fedorov, in what direction is the club headed towards goal scoring? We need goal scorers. We just traded the best and most proven goal scorer on the team.

Brian Burke: I understand that it’s hard for fans to accept. But I think the problem is not that we do not have goal scorers, but that we are not scoring goals. If we continue to outshoot opponents I am confident the goals will come.

Brad – San Dimas, CA: If the plan was to trade Sergei Fedorov, why was it not done sooner?

Brian Burke: I was not shopping Sergei Fedorov. In fact, I showed him the trade rumors in the paper, and told him I was not shopping him. However, I also told him I would trade him, if the right deal came along. This was the first chance we had to move him.

Reed – Westminster, CA: Why did we get so little in return for #91?

Brian Burke: We did not get a small return, we got two players that we think will help. And we got cap room to make further moves.

J Murga – Montebello, CA: Mr. Burke, to you still plan to contend for the cup this season?

Brian Burke: Our goal this season has always been to make the play-offs. And that remains our goal.

Neil Komadoski - Anaheim, CA: Why trade Sergei now? Why not wait till later when teams panic or do it BEFORE the season so we could have moved into the year without dumping Leclerc and Rucchin?

Brian Burke: There was no market for Sergei Fedorov in the off-season. This was the first legitimate offer we got for him.

Chris – San Diego, CA: What's specifically is being discussed to energize the crowds and bring more people to the Pond?

Brian Burke: I think we are playing an up tempo, physical and exciting style that we promised the fans. I believe the crowds will respond to that style of play. Our home record is outstanding, our game presentation is second to none, and we’ve recently added a second LED ring. And we’ll continue to add more amenities as the season moves along.

Nick – Irvine, CA: Do you think the kids Getzlaf and Perry will see more ice time?

Brian Burke: Yes I do. Both have played well but both have been slowed by injuries and I believe they will get more situational ice time.

John - Tustin, CA: When are you going to get some real television announcers...  That John Ahlers or however you spell is name doesn't know hockey... Has he ever even picked up a stick?

Brian Burke: I think our broadcast teams are first rate on radio and television. If I could go hire with a clean slate, I'd hire the guys we have.

Chris Collins - Corona, CA: When will there be another practice session or other community event in the Riverside area with the team?

Brian Burke: We're going to try to do regular outreach programs as a team in Orange and Riverside County. My guess is that the next such event will be at a different venue, but we will try to get back to Riverside at some point in the future. It was a great success.

Luke – Halifax, NS: What is Giguere's current injury status? How long is he expected to be out?

Brian Burke: His injury is a minor hamstring injury and is expected to be back for the weekend.

Reed – Westminster, CA: Are you thinking about trading #8 to free up more money?

Brian Burke: No. I think we went into the season thinking our defense core was solid and I still feel that way.

Denise Collin – Lake Forest, California: Now that you've traded Fedorov, what will it take to turn the team around and into a Western Conference contender?

Brian Burke: We have to start putting the puck in the net and our power play has to get going. 5 on 5, we have virtually played every opponent even or we've out-shot and out-chanced and out-worked them. All that hardwork goes for not unless the puck finds the back of the net and we have to start scoring on the power play. Some of our players who can score goals have to start scoring.

Neil Komadoski - Anaheim, CA: While we are dumping salary, how bout we dump the salary of JS Giguere who we WAY overpaid for?

Brian Burke: I am very happy with our goaltending. I think JS Giguere is a legitimate top ten goaltender and he has played like one so far and I think Bryzgalov has been absolutely suberb as a back-up.

Gene McEwen – Diamond Bar, CA: Hello Brian, I was wondering if there was any realistic chance of Bobby Ryan playing in the NHL this season? Thanks for this opportunity to talk. The die-hard hockey fans really appreciate this.

Brian Burke: Well it's my pleasure to talk to the fans. I think this is a great way to directly address the fans and specific questions so it's my pleasure. Don't thank me. Regarding Bobby Ryan, I do not expect to see him in Anaheim this season and whether he's here as a 19 year old will depend on how he plays.

Chuck Collins - Anaheim, CA: How would you characterize the effectiveness of the new Ducks coach at this point in the season?

Brian Burke: Fans need to remember that we were the only team in our division that made a coaching change. Other than Wayne Gretsky as a new head coach in Phoenix, we are the only team in our division to bring in an entirely new coaching staff who had to learn new systems in all three zones. I think the coaches have done an excellent job and I think the player’s buy-in has been complete. Also the results are there with our shot totals.

Monique McNeill – Irvine, CA: Any plans to make Teemu a few more years as a duck?

Brian Burke: We're not allowed to talk to any player until January 1st about a contract extension. And then only players in their final contract year which includes Teemu.

Ducks Fan – England: Is the salary dump going to continue or do you feel comfortable with our current cap status?

Brian Burke: I am comfortable with our current cap status but will continue to make moves that improve that cap status if they make sense.

DTP – OCCA: Is it a correct assumption that the Niedermayer brothers are untouchable as far as trades go this season?  Are there any other untouchable trade bait on the Ducks (e.g., Getzlaf, Perry)?

Brian Burke: Certainly, I am happy with the play of the Niedermayer brothers, but I don't think any player is untouchable.

Ryan – Palm Springs, CA: What is the upside to the two players acquired yesterday by the Ducks?

Brian Burke: Beauchemin is a 25-year-old defenseman that we think will play right away and help us. Tyler Wright is a gritty bottom 6 forward with penalty killing and leadership skills.
