Vancouver 3, Anaheim 2

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Vancouver’s Sami Salo tallied twice, including the eventual game-winner at 12:12 of the third period, as the Canucks downed the Ducks, 3-2, on Sunday at the Arrowhead Pond.

The Ducks were whistled for 17 minor penalties in the contest and surrendered a penalty shot goal to Vancouver center Trevor Linden with no time remaining in the second period.

Anaheim was sent to their eighth-straight defeat and sixth-straight at home with Sunday’s loss.  The Ducks also lost goaltender JS Giguere who was once again bothered by the hamstring that kept him out of the last two games.  Ilya Bryzgalov took over for Giguere in goal for Anaheim late in the first period.

Salo (5, H. Sedin, D. Sedin) started the scoring at 15:05 of the first period with his first goal of the game.  The Canucks defenseman beat Giguere with a slap shot from the left point to give Vancouver the early 1-0 lead.

Andy McDonald (7, Salei, Ozolinsh) tied the game in the second period at 11:18 with a power play goal of his own.  McDonald ripped a wrist shot past Canucks goaltender Dan Cloutier from inside the right face-off circle for his seventh goal of the season.

For the second-straight game, an opponent was awarded a penalty shot when Anaheim defenseman Keith Carney was found guilty of hauling Linden down in the waning seconds of the second period.  Linden beat Bryzgalov on the penalty shot with no time remaining in the period and sent Vancouver to the dressing room with a 2-1 lead after two periods.

Bryzgalov stopped a penalty shot by Colorado’s Brett Clark on Friday night.  The Russian netminder is now 1-2 against penaly shots in his career.

Anaheim clawed their way back even again when Rob Niedermayer’s shot (4, Sykora, S. Niedermayer) on the power play deflected off the leg of a Canucks player and over the right shoulder of Cloutier.

Salo (6, Naslund, Morrison) would tally his second goal of the game at 12:12 of the third period for what would prove to be the game-winner for the Canucks.

The Ducks will hit the road on Tuesday for two games before the Thanksgiving holiday.  Anaheim will face Phoenix on Tuesday at Glendale Arena at 6 PM and Dallas at the American Airlines Center on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.  The Ducks return home to the Arrowhead Pond for a Friday matinee contest at 1 PM versus the Detroit Red Wings.
