ANAHEIM, Calif. - Pavol Demitra and Alexander Frolov scored for Los Angeles in the shootout as the Kings defeated the Ducks, 4-3, on Friday night at the Arrowhead Pond.

Anaheim picked up a standings point in the shootout defeat and moved into a tie for third place in the Pacific Division with the Phoenix Coyotes with 34 points.

“It was very entertaining, two good teams playing with the rivalry we have with each other,” said Ducks winger Teemu Selanne.  “It was great to see the building rocking.  There were lots of emotions and intensity.”

The Ducks found themselves down two goals in the first period as Los Angeles got a pair of power play goals from Derek Armstrong (5, Frolov, Norstrom at 7:06) and Dustin Brown (7, Belanger, Vishnovsky at 15:48).

With 16.4 seconds remaining in the first period, Petr Sykora (6, McDonald, Beauchemin) got the Ducks on the board as the right winger beat Kings netminder Mathieu Garon to cut the LA lead in half, 2-1.

After the intermission, Todd Marchant (5, Lupul, Kunitz) found the back of the Kings net at 1:50 of the second period.  Marchant’s wrister deflected off the Kings’ Craig Conroy and Aaron Miller and by Garon to tie the game, 2-2.

“We came back from being down 2-0 and did a lot of good things,” said Selanne. “I think we had a lot of chances and we couldn’t take advantage. On some nights it’s tough like that. “

Anaheim got the go-ahead-goal at 9:14 of the second period when center Joffrey Lupul (13, Konopka, R. Niedermayer) tallied on the power play to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.  Lupul took a Konopka feed in the crease and jammed it past Garon for his 13th on the season, matching his career-high in all of 2003-2004.

In the third period, the Kings got an unlikely goal from 21-year-old Petr Kanko, a Czech winger making his NHL debut.  Kanko (1, Giuliano) spun a puck from the side of the net and off the skate of Ducks defenseman Keith Carney past Giguere for the tying goal.

After a scoreless overtime period, Demitra and Frolov beat Giguere consecutively in the shootout to put the Kings up 2-0.  Selanne lost the handle on the puck and missed the Ducks first attempt.  Captain Scott Niedermayer was denied by Garon with Anaheim’s second attempt.  Garon stuck out the right pad as Niedermayer tried to stickhandle around the Kings’ netminder.

“Overtime and shootouts haven’t been kind to us,” said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle.  “It’s disheartening for our players because we worked extremely hard and did a lot of good things."

The Ducks will skate again at the Arrowhead Pond on Sunday against the retooled San Jose Sharks at 5 PM.
