Ducks 4, Kings 3 (OT)

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Teemu Selanne scored two goals to reach 1,000 career NHL points and Scott Niedermayer scored the game winning goal at 1:48 of overtime to lead the Ducks over the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 on Monday night at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim.

"It was an unbelievable night and a good ending too," said Selanne.  "Two great teams played against each other and there was overtime, lots of chances. I think it was great for the fans, as well as for myself. It was a great night."

It was the Ducks second victory over the rival Kings in the last three days.  Anaheim defeated Los Angeles 6-2 on Saturday at Staples Center.

After spotting the Kings a goal by Dustin Brown (11, Belanger, Avery) with 24 seconds remaining in the first period, Selanne started his history-making evening at 7:38 of the second.

The Finnish Flash took a pass from Scott Niedermayer streaking into the Kings zone on the power play and quickly beat LA netminder Mathieu Garon between the pads for his 23rd goal of the season (S. Niedermayer, Beauchemin).

"All season he's been stepping up like he did today and scoring big goals for us," said Captain Scott Niedermayer of Selanne. "That's a big part of why we're clawing our way back."

The Kings countered at 15:09 of the second with Derek Armstrong (11, Frolov, Vishnovsky) picking up his 11th tally of the year to regain the lead for LA, 2-1.

Rookie Ryan Getzlaf (8, McDonald, S. Niedermayer) got the Ducks even once again with a blistering slap shot from the point on the 5-on-3 advantage with 5.4 seconds to play in the second period to make it 2-2.

Fittingly, Selanne's 1,000th career point came on a beautiful backhand goal on a breakaway at 8:33 of the third period to give the Ducks the 3-2 lead.  Selanne hustled past the Kings defense to get alone on Garon and scored the type of goal with which you'd expect the Finn to reach this milestone.

"I knew right away what I was going to do. I just hoped it would go in. I had a couple of chances before," said Selanne.  Mac [Andy McDonald] made an unbelievable pass, a pass you don't see very often. It was awesome. Usually when I get a breakaway I have a good chance to score. This time I knew it was going to go in. It was a fantastic feeling."

The entire Ducks bench rushed the ice to join Selanne in celebration as the crowd of 17,174 saluted the veteran winger.

"I'm very happy it happened at home because we have great fans here and this is a very special place for me," said Selanne.  "I'm very lucky that I play with some great players. A thousand points doesn't come for nothing, so you need lots of luck and great players around you."

LA defenseman Joe Corvo (12, Cammalleri, Vishnovsky) tried to ruin the festivities at 17:57 of the third period to tie the game and force overtime.

Captain Scott Niedermayer (8, Marchant) made sure Ducks fans wouldn't go home disappointed by beating Garon at 1:48 of overtime to win the game for Anaheim.

"Scott Niedermayer put it upstairs where they keep the peanut butter, as they used to say," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "Top shelf."

The Ducks face the San Jose Sharks in another key divisional game on Wednesday at 7:30 PM at the Arrowhead Pond.
