Selanne Nominated for Masterton
ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Anaheim chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association (PHWA) announced today that Teemu Selanne has been named a nominee for the 2005-06 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Masterton Trophy is presented annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The winner will be selected at the end of the regular season by a poll of the PHWA's 30 chapters. Last season's recipient was defenseman Bryan Berard, then a member of the Chicago Blackhawks.

"It's an honor to be nominated for this award," said Selanne. "This season has been so much fun and I'm very happy to be feeling healthy and strong again."

Selanne, 35, is competing in his 14th NHL season, and his seventh in an Anaheim uniform. He leads the team in goals (39), assists (50) and points (89) as well as power play goals (17), power play points (39) and plus/minus (+30). Selanne underwent surgery on his knee this past off-season, which he credits for helping his statistical turnaround in 2005-2006.

The native of Helsinki, Finland, competed for his home country in the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. He scored 6-5=11 points in eight tournament games, and was voted the tournament's Best Forward en route to helping Finland capture a silver meal.

A 6-0, 204 pound forward, Selanne ranks among Anaheim's all-time leaders in several categories, including goals (2nd with 264), points (2nd with 571) and assists (2nd with 307). Additionally, he ranks fourth on the Mighty Ducks all-time games played list with 472.

Selanne is an active member of the Southern California community and the Mighty Ducks' community relations efforts. In addition to visiting Children's Hospital of Orange County on numerous occasions each season, Selanne donates his time and energies to a variety of Southern California charities.
