Teemu Selanne Wins Masterton Trophy

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The National Hockey League announced today that Teemu Selanne has been awarded the 2005-06 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The Masterton Trophy is presented annually to the NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey by vote of the Professional Hockey Writers Association (PHWA). Selanne was selected by a poll of the PHWA's 30 chapters at the end of the regular season.

"Teemu Selanne is both a dedicated player on the ice and a quality person away from it," said Anaheim Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Burke. "We're proud he wears an Anaheim sweater and congratulate him on this deserved accomplishment."

Selanne, 35 (7/3/70), scored 40-50=90 points in 80 games with the Ducks last season.  He led the team in goals, points, power play goals (18), power play points (40) and plus/minus (+28) in 2005-06.  Selanne's 90 points were the most he had scored in a single season since his 107 points in 1998-99 with Anaheim. Selanne underwent surgery on his knee this past off-season, which he credits for helping in his statistical turnaround in 2005-2006.

In 16 Stanley Cup Playoff games, Selanne led the Ducks in points with 6-8=14 points.  He has scored 13-15=28 points in 31 career playoff games as a Duck, ranking second all-time in franchise history.

"It's really a great honor to win this award, especially when you look around at all of the guys in this league who I feel are just as deserving," said Teemu Selanne. "I'm proud to share this honor with my family and teammates who've supported me throughout my career."

Since entering the league in 1992-93, Selanne ranks second in the NHL in goals with 492 (Jaromir Jagr, 532) and third in points with 1,041. The 6-0, 204-pound winger has led the Ducks in goals in four of his five full seasons with the club and has averaged 37 goals per year over his 14 NHL seasons.

Selanne is an active member of the Southern California community and the Mighty Ducks' community relations efforts. In addition to visiting Children's Hospital of Orange County on numerous occasions each season, Selanne donates his time and energies to a variety of Southern California charities.
