Ducks 2, Blues 0

By Chris DiPierro

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Chris Kunitz tallied twice on the power play and JS Giguere made 34 saves as the Ducks remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday at Honda Center.

The Ducks record moved to 3-0 on the young season.

"We had the work ethic and we had the defense going tonight," said Kunitz. "Our goalie played really well also."

Giguere, who has been solid in his first two starts for the Ducks, got his first shutout since February 4, 2006 at San Jose.

The Ducks also used special teams to their advantage scoring two power play goals and killing five penalties en route to the victory.

"To win games you need to be strong on the power play and the PK and pretty much all aspects of the game have to be good," said Giguere. "So, that was a good team effort tonight."

Kunitz got his first goal of the contest at 16:42 of period one. The 27-year-old left wing deflected a hard Teemu Selanne slap shot past Blues netminder Curtis Sanford to give the Ducks a 1-0 lead.

Kunitz scored his second goal of the game and third of the season just 35 seconds into the third period. Linemate Andy McDonald got a shot on Sanford from the side of the net. The rebound kicked to Kunitz who tallied the insurance marker.

"Coaches are never satisfied," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "There aren't many who will say their team was 100 percent. There is always room for improvement."

Anaheim plays the second of a five-game string at Honda Center on Wednesday against the New York Islanders at 7:05 p.m.

NOTES: Center Samuel Pahlsson played in his 196th consecutive game as a Duck moving him into sole possession of 2nd place all-time in Anaheim Ducks history in that category. Oleg Tverdovsky played in the most consecutive games as a Duck with 237…Selanne was honored by the Ducks in a ceremony before the game as the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy winner for 2005-2006. Selanne won the award at the NHL Awards ceremony in June in Vancouver. The Masterton is awarded to the player that best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey.
