Islanders 5, Ducks 4 (SO)

By Chris DiPierro

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Mike York scored the deciding goal in the shootout and Mike Dunham stopped 46 shots in the game to lift the New York Islanders to a 5-4 shootout victory over Anaheim on Wednesday night at Honda Center.

The victory gave the Islanders their first win of 2006-2007. The Ducks are now 3-0-1 on the season.

"It's good to get two points against a tough team like this on this road trip," said Islanders head coach Ted Nolan who notched his first victory as an NHL head coach since the 1996-1997 season. "Now we go home for a good stretch."

Samuel Pahlsson got things going offensively for Anaheim with his first goal of the game at 12:20 of the first period. Pahlsson beat Islanders netminder Mike Dunham with a wrist shot from the left face off circle.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead into the dressing room after out-shooting the Islanders 17-6 in the first period.

"We came out and dominated that first period and played probably our best period of the year," said Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger. "We had a ton of scoring chances. For whatever reason, we came out in the second and forgot about what we did in the first."

New York took the play to the Ducks in the second period, netting three goals in less than two minutes. The Islanders got even-strength markers from York and Trent Hunter and a power play goal from Chris Simon to take a 3-1 lead at the 5:38 mark of the period.

"That really hurt us and hurt our momentum, said Ducks forward Andy McDonald. "It's a learning experience. You've got to play hard for 60 minutes."

Pahlsson got a goal back for the Ducks off a two-on-one with linemate Travis Moen at 9:58 of the second period.

Anaheim took advantage of five Islanders penalties in the third period to get back into the contest.

"We did a lot of good things, but we had some mental lapses in the second period that cost us, said Anaheim head Coach Randy Carlyle. "We battled back and got the lead in the third period."

The Ducks tied the game when Pronger netted his first goal as a Duck at 7:49 of the third period. Pronger pinched in from the point on the power play and got a wrist shot by Dunham to tie the game 3-3.

Corey Perry gave Anaheim a 4-3 lead at 13:57 of the third period on the power play. Perry's rebound goal was his second of the season.

The Islanders tied the contest 4-4 on a Alexei Yashin wrist shot at 16:17 of the third period.

After a scoreless overtime, the Ducks and Islanders took six rounds of a shootout to decide the winner. York deked and beat Giguere to give his club their first win of the season.

"We worked extremely hard," said Carlyle. "When we got down we were able to regroup and establish our strong forecheck game and got back on pucks. All those things were big-time positives for us."

The Ducks next face the Dallas Stars at Honda Center on Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
