Dallas 4, Anaheim 3 (SO)

By Chris DiPierro

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Jussi Jokinen scored the deciding goal in the shootout for the Dallas Stars to hand the Ducks their second-straight shootout defeat 4-3 on Sunday at Honda Center.

With the victory, the Stars remain unbeaten with a 5-0-0 record.

Anaheim used a third period comeback to force the extra hockey. Ducks center Andy McDonald deflected a Chris Pronger slap shot with 18.3 seconds remaining in the game to tie the contest 3-3.

"We played two good periods of hockey," said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle. "The positive is that we were down two and found a way to get back in the hockey game."

In the shootout, Stars netminder Marty Turco stopped two Anaheim shooters including a spin-move attempt by Ducks forward Ryan Shannon. The Stars' Sergei Zubov and Jokinen each scored on JS Giguere.

"We had some good shooters out there and we just didn't get the luck of the draw," said Ducks forward Rob Niedermayer. "That's what you've got to have in shootouts."

Speedy forward Todd Marchant gave the Ducks a 1-0 lead in the contest at 16:16 of the first period with a shorthanded tally. Marchant picked up the puck along the boards inside the Ducks zone and outraced Stars center Mike Modano down the ice. Marchant finished the play with a quick backhand shot past Turco.

Anaheim out shot the Stars 16-9 in the first period but much like Wednesday night's contest against the New York Islanders, it was the second period where the Ducks struggled.

"It's early," said McDonald. "With the guys we have in this locker room, this is just two games. We didn't play 60 minutes tonight. We let off in the second and it cost us."

Zubov got the Stars even on the power play at 2:40 of the second frame with a one-time blast from his left point position. The goal was Zubov's first of the season.

Niklas Hagman gave Dallas a 2-1 lead at 8:40 of the period with his second goal of the season. Hagman streaked down the left wing and picked up a pass from Stu Barnes and flipped a wrist shot short-side past Ducks netminder Ilya Bryzgalov.

After the Hagman goal, Carlyle decided to change his goaltender substituting Giguere for Bryzgalov.

"I don't like short-side goals and they had two go on the short side," said Carlyle. "I felt we were flat as a group and I thought (the change) would help our composure."

Dallas made it a 3-1 advantage on the power play late in the second. Antii Miettinen fired a wrist shot from the left face off dot past a sprawling Giguere at 17:10 of the period.

Anaheim's third period comeback started when captain Scott Niedermayer tallied during a delayed-penalty situation at 9:44. Niedermayer caught a pass from brother Rob in front of the net and scored on a wrist shot.

"We played the game in three parts and two of them were good for us and one was awful," said Carlyle.

McDonald's third period marker at 19:41 earned the Ducks the extra point in the standings despite the shootout loss.

"We're going to build on the positives, said Carlyle. "There is no quit in this group. It's a divisional rival and a hockey club that dominated us last year. We found a way to get back in the hockey game and have an opportunity to win."

The Ducks continue their homestand on Wednesday against the Detroit Red Wings at 7:05 p.m.
