Giguere Named to Three Stars This Week

AFINOGENOV, GIGUERE AND SOURAY NAMED NHL'S THREE STARS OF THE WEEK

NEW YORK (Oct. 16, 2006) - Buffalo Sabres right wing Maxim Afinogenov, Anaheim goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Montreal Canadiens defenseman Sheldon Souray, have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending Oct. 22.

Each Monday, the NHL recognizes three players who delivered the League's top performances over the preceding week.

FIRST STAR - MAXIM AFINOGENOV, RW, BUFFALO SABRES

Afinogenov led all scorers for the week, posting 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in three games. He tallied at least one goal and one assist in each of the Sabres' three victories as Buffalo stretched its season-opening winning streak to eight games. On Oct. 17, Afinogenov tallied one goal and four assists in a 9-1 home-ice win over Philadelphia. He scored one goal and two assists in a 5-4 win over Carolina, Oct. 20 and pushed his goal scoring streak to four games with one goal and one assist in a 6-2 win at Boston, Oct. 21. Afinogenov leads all NHL scorers with 14 points (5-9-14) in eight games.

SECOND STAR - JEAN-SEBASTIEN GIGUERE, G, ANAHEIM DUCKS

Giguere played in each of Anaheim's three victories, posting a 3-0-0 record, 1.30 goals-against average and .951 save percentage. He opened the week with 21 saves in a 4-1 home-ice victory against Detroit, Oct. 18, handed the Minnesota Wild their first defeat of the season (2-1) on Oct. 20 and saved three shootout attempts as the Ducks beat the Kings 3-2 at Los Angeles Sunday. The Ducks (6-0-2) remain unbeaten in regulation time this season.

THIRD STAR - SHELDON SOURAY, D, MONTREAL CANADIENS

With four goals, three assists and seven points, Souray finished tied for third among all scorers for the week as the Canadiens won two of three starts. Souray opened the week with two goals and one assist as Montreal defeated the Calgary Flames 5-4, Oct. 17. On Oct. 18, he was held scoreless as Montreal lost 2-1 in Chicago. He finished the week with two goals and two assists in a 8-6 home ice victory over the Colorado Avalanche on Oct 21.
