Ducks Dealing on a Monday

By Chris DiPierro

On a Monday morning that found the Ducks atop the NHL standings with 30 points at 13-1-4, GM Brian Burke continued to enhance his first place club with three separate personnel moves.

Anaheim traded enforcer Todd Fedoruk to the Philadelphia Flyers for a fourth-round draft pick in 2007 and picked up heavyweight George Parros from the Colorado Avalanche for a second-rounder in June.

Anaheim also dealt left wing Stanislav Chistov to the Boston Bruins for a third-round pick in 2007.

Fedoruk has been on the shelf for the Ducks since suffering a facial injury in a fight with Minnesota's Derek Boogaard on October 27.

"I want to start by thanking Todd for a job well done for us," said Burke. "Fridge was the first trade I made as GM of this team and he's a good man who did a very nice job for us. But, it was clear to us that this was going to be a lengthy injury in terms of when he'll be able to come back and perform his job again, and I don't like playing without a heavyweight. I think everyone knows that."

Fedoruk, who will become an unrestricted free agent after this season, will head back to the team that drafted him and to the city where he currently makes his offseason home.

"It would have been tough, if not impossible, to sign him," said Burke. "We found a good place for him. He played there before and his wife is from there."

In Parros, the Ducks pick up another heavyweight whom Ducks fans will remember for his 55 games in a Kings uniform last season.

The 6-5, 232-pound right winger was claimed off waivers by Colorado on October 3 and has appeared in two games for the Avs this season. He missed several games with a bruised shoulder.

"I really enjoyed my time (in Colorado), but (the Ducks) are off to a great start, have a great defensive core and a real good team. Not to mention I'll be living in California now, so the stars have kind of aligned it seems."

Parros played four seasons at Princeton University in the ECAC and spent two full seasons with the Manchester Monarchs of the AHL before cracking the LA lineup last season.

"You've all seen Georgie since he used to play right up the highway," said Burke. "He's the type of player we look for, and as many of the attributes of Todd Fedoruk. He's got intensity and character, and is obviously highly intelligent, as you can see by where he went to school."

The final move in a busy morning in the Ducks front office had Chistov going east to Boston for a third-round pick in 2007.

"I want to thank him too," said Burke. "Obviously, we didn't get much out of him this time around, but that's not his fault. I think when a team has one regulation loss in the first 16 or 17 games, it makes it tough to get in and play and expect much from the player."

Chistov was a first-round draft pick (5th overall) of the Ducks in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. The 5-10, 200-pound forward has appeared in one game with the Ducks this season and has 136 career NHL games to his credit.

"There's no reason not to give this kid a chance to play somewhere else," said Burke. "So, we wish him well in Boston because he's a good guy and didn't really get the chance to show us what he could do."

Also involved in all three deals on Monday were conditional swaps of later round picks with each team. In the Fedoruk deal, Anaheim acquired the conditional right to exchange fifth-round selections in 2007. The Ducks will also hold the option to exchange third-round picks with Colorado in 2007 as a result of the Parros deal. And, the Ducks have the option to swap fourth-round picks with the Bruins in 2008.
