ANAHEIM, Calif. - The National Hockey League announced today that Anaheim captain Scott Niedermayer was named the recipient of the Mark Messier Leadership Award for his leadership skills on and off the ice. COLD-fX, the official immune enhancer of the NHL and the NHL Players' Association, will donate $5,000 to Ducks Care, the charity of Niedermayer's choice. In addition, VERSUS will air a special segment on Niedermayer during tonight's game broadcast.

"As remarkable as Scotty's play has been on the ice throughout his career, it is his leadership in our locker room and our community that has impressed me the most," says Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Brian Burke. "Congratulations to Scotty on another meaningful and well-deserved award."

Niedermayer has captained the Ducks to a league-leading 25-4-6 record this season. Among all defensemen in the NHL, he is tied for third in points (29) and ranks second in assists (24), behind teammate Chris Pronger.

"It's an honor to be selected for this award by one of the greatest leaders this sport has ever seen," said Niedermayer. "I'd like to give a lot of credit to everyone in our dressing room. The guys are playing hard for each other every night and are fully committed to team oriented play."

Since joining the Ducks in 2005, Niedermayer has been an active participant in the team's annual fundraisers, including the Anaheim Ducks Golf Classic, Meet the Team wine tasting event and Dux in Tux, a black-tie dinner in which Ducks players serve as "celebrity waiters." For the second straight holiday season, Niedermayer and his three sons served Thanksgiving dinner to needy local residents. The Niedermayer family also adopted a family of six by providing them with food and gifts in hopes of brightening their holiday season.

Periodically throughout the season, Messier and the NHL, will recognize players for their athletic performance; ability to motivate and influence teammates; a commitment to the community and charitable causes; and dedication to a professional attitude as a representative of their sport and as a positive role model within society. At season's end, one player will be named the Mark Messier Leader of the Year and have his name engraved on the Mark Messier Leadership Award.
