Hot Off Homestand, Ducks Hit Road

After dropping their first game of the homestand, the Ducks reeled off six straight, culminating with the 3-1 triumph over Ottawa on Monday night.

Thriving off a 6-1 homestand and playing their best hockey of the season, the Ducks departed Tuesday morning for two games at Chicago and Colorado. And while the Ducks made significant strides over those games, they hope the momentum from those wins can propel them through the last 14 games of the regular season and into the playoffs.

“This was a huge homestand,” said Doug Weight, who acknowledged feeling good the morning after his first game in the lineup since Feb. 8. “We did a great job of taking advantage of that, feeding off our fans and getting that fever back into this city and this building. We’re excited to keep building on that and hopefully snowballing. Peaking at the right time is what we want to do.”

Corey Perry, who had his first goal at home last night since Jan, 13, said, “Our team played well and we got some bounces. It definitely was a big jumpstart for us.”

Noticeably clicking on the ice, the Ducks have rattled off 11 wins in their last 12 games dating back to Feb. 5 at the New York Islanders. In helping the Ducks outscore opponents 37-19 in those games, Ryan Getzlaf said the chemistry will continue to improve going forward.

“I think it’s being developed,” Getzlaf said. “Obviously over time here, it’s only going to get better. Those are the things that we have to work on right now.”

Taking part in similar stretch runs over the past two seasons, Perry sees that same fire burning in his teammates eyes that proved so crucial in bringing home a championship last year.

“Everybody is filling their role and knows what it is,” Perry said. “That’s what happened last year when we started this. When we were going into the playoffs, everybody adapted to their role and fulfilled it. It’s starting to look the same way this year.”

In a tight-knit race for the Pacific Division lead with Dallas and San Jose, the Ducks are determined to wear that crown for a second consecutive season. Currently Anaheim’s 83 points sits just four back from the first-place Stars and one ahead of the third-place Sharks.

“We’ve been pushing to be the best we can be and to keep moving up the standings,” Perry said. “Everybody knows what’s at stake, so everybody is getting prepared."
