Pronger Incident Under Further Review

After initially believing there would be no punishment for an incident in Wednesday night’s game with Vancouver, Chris Pronger arrived to Honda Center this morning with the news that it is being further reviewed by the NHL.

The act in question took place one minute into the second period when Pronger was tangled up behind the Ducks net with Ryan Kesler of the Canucks. Replays showed that while trying to get loose, Pronger’s skate came down on Kesler’s leg. Deciding if a suspension is necessary for Pronger’s action in the scramble is the NHL’s task at hand, and an announcement from the league will come later. No exact timetable was given by the league.

After initial video appeared to be inconclusive and ultimately not warrant action against Pronger, league officials are currently analyzing new video from outlets in Canada.

“I got a text message last night saying that there was no suspension and it was not under review,” Pronger said. “Things change, whether it was new video or whatever the reason was behind the 180. I was a little surprised.”

The Ducks’ captain said he must wait to hear what the outcome is to figure out what his next step will be.

“I don’t know what we’re going to do,” Pronger said. “We’ve obviously got to see what happens with the review process. Burkie [Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Burke] is going to get in touch with [NHL Senior VP and Director of Hockey Operations] Colin [Campbell] and that’s how the process works. From there, he’s got to find out what we’re going to do and we’ll talk about it then.”

Fully entrenched in the stretch run toward the playoffs, which features eight of the last nine games against Pacific Division foes, the Ducks undoubtedly would prefer their captain to remain in their lineup. But if it’s revealed that Pronger must miss time, the team is prepared to deal with such a decision.

“These are the things that we have to deal with and we’ll deal with it as a team,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. “We’ll go forward. We have to accept whatever actions the league takes, if they take any, and then we’ll move on.”

Said Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, “He’s one of the best defensemen in this league, so it’s hard to replace him, but we have the guys to do the job. It’s out of our hands now. We just have to accept what the league is going to throw at us and move forward after that.”
