On Saturday May 17, approximately 150 fourth graders from nine different schools in the area descended on the Honda Center parking lot to participate in the inaugural Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. Street Hockey Shootout.

In a four-hour event consisting of street hockey mini-games, concessions and music, a double elimination tournament was the featured attraction of the afternoon.

The goal of the tournament was to have the kids put everything they had learned in their two-week S.C.OR.E. street hockey course and challenge other schools in the program to see where they stood. Each team was guaranteed to play a minimum of two games, and all students received an award for their efforts and sportsmanship.

Ducks assistant coach Newell Brown was on hand and presented participants with medals at the conclusion of the event.

As families, friends and classmates were among the 400-plus people in attendance, the team from Friends Christian located in Yorba Linda was crowned the champion of the tournament. The win gave the kids a chance to simulate the 2006-07 Anaheim Ducks, as they were presented with a mini-Stanley Cup, which they too hoisted overhead for all to see. Friends Christian will have its school name engraved into the trophy and it will be displayed at the school until next year’s event.

At the conclusion of the festivities, Ducks assistant coach Newell Brown, Ducks TV host Kent French and Wild Wing were all on hand to present awards to the first, second and third place schools. Having won the tournament, Friends Christian also received a championship banner.

With the immense success of the inaugural event, the field for next season’s S.C.O.R.E. Street Hockey Shootout will be looking to expand from nine to 16 teams.
