Ducks to Honor Local Olympians

The Ducks will honor Orange County-based athletes who medaled in the 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games this Sunday, Oct. 19 when the club takes on the Carolina Hurricanes (5:05 p.m.) at Honda Center. Beijing swimming hero and Irvine native Jason Lezak headlines the group of Team USA athletes that will attend Sunday’s game, giving the community a chance to recognize these local Olympians for their recent accomplishments. In addition, gold medalist Paralympian Nick Scandone of Fountain Valley will also be honored

“We felt it important to recognize our local Olympians in front of their hometown crowd,” said Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Brian Burke, who will also serve as General Manager for Team USA at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. “These athletes work their whole lives to represent their country at the highest level of competition and we feel a sense of duty in showing them our appreciation.”

All Olympians attending are scheduled to participate in a special pre-game ceremony and puck drop taking place at center ice. The honorees will then take in the game from a suite, cheering for their hometown team. Following the conclusion of Sunday’s contest, the athletes will join Ducks players for a postgame meet-and-greet.

A three time Beijing medalist, Lezak anchored the 4x100 meter freestyle relay team that captured gold and also set a world record time of 3:08:24. In addition, he anchored the 4x100 meter medley relay team that set a world record of 3:29:34 and captured the gold medal. Lezak also tied for the bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle.
