Ducks Break Glass on Science of Hockey Exhibit

Ducks captain Scott Niedermayer and alternate captains Chris Pronger and Ryan Getzlaf were on hand to "break the glass" on the Discovery Science Center’s newest expansion, The Science of Hockey, on Thursday in Santa Ana.

Niedermayer, Pronger and Getzlaf were joined by Ducks CEO Michael Schulman and Executive Vice President/COO Tim Ryan, along with Discovery Science Center President Joe Adams and Board Chair Dan Bolar at the unique glass-breaking event.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for us because you have champions like the Ducks involved in it,” said Adams. “There is science all over hockey, and we’re going to bring all of it to life here at the Discovery Science Center. This is a great way to gets kids inspired to get kids to learn more about math and science, and this is an exciting partnership.”

Niedermayer, Pronger and Getzlaf, decked out in gloves and protective goggles, took hammers to a pane of glass to mark construction of the exhibition combining science and sport. Watch them break the glass.

At The Science of Hockey, opening in the spring of 2009, visitors will experience interactive hockey exhibitions as they explore physics and physiology. Exhibition highlights include a Zamboni, Penalty Box and Broadcast Booth, among many other familiar sights in an NHL arena.

“There are so many aspects of the game that tie into science,” Pronger said. “The things you learn in school can be applied to the game of hockey. There is an infinite amount of things you can talk about that are related to math or science in hockey. It’s going to be an interesting exhibit, that’s for sure.”

Added Getzlaf," There is a lot involved in hockey that many people don't think about, including us. This could be the opportunity for us to learn a thing or two and maybe grow the game a bit in the process."

Scott Niedermayer said he planned on bringing his kids back to the Discovery Science Center to check out the exhibit when it's complete. "This is a neat thing," he said. "In a game like hockey, you often don't think about how things are happening and why, but it will be neat to come back and see the exhibit when it's done and how they've broken it down."

Located at 2500 N. Main St. in Santa Ana, Calif., Taco Bell Discovery Science Center is Orange County’s leading destination for hands-on science fun.
