First Flight Field Trip is Thursday

The Anaheim Ducks will host more than 15,000 elementary school students, grades 3-6 at the ninth annual First Flight Field Trip on Thursday at Honda Center. Students and teachers from throughout Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Los Angeles Counties will convene for the interactive learning program. Doors open at 9 a.m. with the hockey segment of the program featuring the entire Ducks roster beginning at 11 a.m.

“The noise that fills Honda Center during the First Flight Field Trip is deafening,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant. “Seeing how much fun the children have while learning something new at the same time is a great reward for us. We’re pleased we can bring such a unique educational and hockey experience to the youth of our community each year.”

The First Flight Field Trip is a one-of-a-kind educational experience that transforms Honda Center into an interactive classroom. In this year’s focus, children will explore how water and liquids affect the Ducks as they compete on the ice. Along with learning these concepts using an official First Flight workbook, students will hear from Ducks’ players and coaches live. Recognized as an educational event by the California State Assembly, the academic principles of First Flight follow the state’s educational content standards. Thursday’s interactive event is just one facet of the award-winning Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education) Program, which was developed in 2005 with the ultimate goal of promoting healthy living and academic excellence to all students in Southern California. In addition to being recognized for its educational initiatives, the S.C.O.R.E. program has received the Celebrate Literacy awards from both the local and state chapters of the International Reading Association.

The Anaheim Ducks invited Southern California schools to participate in the First Flight event at no cost to the schools or students. Children and teachers alike will be entertained by on-ice activities that include practice drills and a skills event featuring the entire Ducks roster. Players will be competing in such disciplines as hardest shot, shooting accuracy, fastest skater and the breakaway challenge. During scheduled breaks, players will interact with the students and reveal answers to the questions in their First Flight workbooks. The topics covered by Ducks players will include the importance of hydration to a professional athlete, how Honda Center staff members help to maintain the ice for hockey games and much more.

In addition, exhibits enabling students to get a closer look at the elements of water and liquids and how they relate to hockey will be on display before the on-ice program (9-10:30 a.m.). The following organizations have joined the Ducks for this day of education by creating these exhibits, which will be located throughout the concourse areas of Honda Center: Orange County Department of Education, Cal State Fullerton, Chapman University, Ocean Institute, Orange County Water District, Zamboni Company, Anaheim Public Utilities, Municipal Water District of Orange County and Windows on our Waters.
