Jr. Ducks Take Two SCAHA Titles

With five teams representing the Jr. Ducks in this past weekend’s SCAHA Playoffs, the odds of one of the teams winning their respective championship game were pretty good. By the time the tournament ended at the Toyota Sports Center, there were two Jr. Ducks teams left standing, celebrating their SCAHA championships.

The Jr. Ducks Bantam A pulled out a 5-4 thriller over the Maple Leafs of Pasadena to win their division. “Since Day 1, our team’s success has been based on team chemistry and team comradery,” said head coach Mark Mollica. “We have no superstars or top players on our team. What we do have is 15 young men willing to go to battle for their teammates every time they step on the ice.”

In an offensive-packed championship game, the Jr. Ducks PeeWee A pulled out a lopsided victory from the Stars of Ontario. The game was relatively close through the first two periods, until the Jr. Ducks scored three goals in the third period to seal the championship for the team from Anaheim. “I am very proud of what they were able to accomplish this past weekend,” said PeeWee A Jr. Ducks head coach  Scott Yath. “The style of hockey we had in place matched the skills and desire of the players this season and it was all able to gel together well.”

The Jr. Ducks PeeWee A team has a couple skaters that are following the lead of their fathers, who are well-known hockey players in Anaheim. Teemu Selanne has two sons (Eetu and Eemil) who play for the squad, and former Ducks Brad May’s son Tyler also plays for the team.

The Bantam A and PeeWee A teams join the Peewee B team in qualifying for the California State Championships. The Jr. Ducks Pee Wee B lost in OT in their championship game this past weekend, but still earned a birth in the “B” division State Championships to be held March 27-29 at the Iceoplex in Escondido. Meanwhile, the “A” division State Championships will take place April 3-5 at Easy Street Arena in Simi Valley.
