Ducks Select Five on Day 2 of Draft
Anaheim choose defenseman Matt Clark in the second round (37th overall) to begin their Day 2 selections at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.
The Ducks selected five players on the second day of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in Montreal, Quebec. Among its five picks, Anaheim selected defenseman Matthew Clark (second round, 37th overall), goaltender Igor Bobkov (third round, 76th overall), defenseman Sami Vatanen (fourth round, 106th overall), right wing Radoslav Illo (fifth round, 136th overall) and defenseman Scott Valentine (sixth round, 166th overall).

“We selected players who combine a high-talent level with extraordinary passion for the game,” said Ducks Director of Amateur Scouting Martin Madden. “Over the last two days in Montreal, we have added players the entire Scouting Department is very excited about. We continue to add depth to our prospect pool and we look forward to helping further these players’ development over the next several years.”

Clark, 18 (10/17/90), scored 3-20=23 points with a +21 rating and 91 PIM in 63 games with Brampton of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). A native of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, Clark moved to Ontario at the age of five where he played minor hockey, including two seasons with the Brampton Capitals of the Ontario Provincial Junior ‘A’ League (OJHL). In 2007-08 with the Capitals, he recorded 6-11=17 points with 82 PIM in 46 games.

Bobkov, 18 (1/2/91), played for Magnitogorsk 2 in Russia last season. A native of Surgut, Russia, the 6-4, 192-pound Bobkov is the first Russian goaltender selected by Anaheim since Ilya Bryzgalov was chosen in the second round (44th overall) of the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. Bobkov was the starting goaltender for Team Russia at the 2009 U-18 World Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, going on to be named the top goaltender of the tournament after posting a 5-2 record with 3.33 GAA (20 GA/360 MIN) and .927 SV% (254-of-274).

Vatanen, 18 (6/3/91), captained Team Finland to a bronze medal 5-4 win over Team Canada at the 2009 Under-18 World Championships in Fargo, North Dakota. In six games during the tournament, Vatanen recorded 0-5=5 points and a +6 rating. He spent a majority of the 2008-09 regular season with his hometown Jyvaskyla Jyps junior team in Finland, scoring 2-7=10 points with 22 PIM in 20 games. He listed the Ducks as his favorite team and Scott Niedermayer as his favorite player.

Illo, 19 (1/21/90), scored 21-12=33 points with 37 PIM in 47 games with the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League (USHL) in 2008-09. A native of Bystrica, Slovakia, Illo was hampered by a shoulder injury in the first half of the season but rebounded to record eight power play goals and two game-winning goals with the Storm last season.

Valentine, 18 (5/2/91), split the 2008-09 OHL season with London and Oshawa, combining for 1-8=9 points with 71 PIM in 43 games. Valentine began the season with London before being acquired by Oshawa as part of the John Tavares trade on Jan. 8, 2009. He made his OHL debut in 2007-08, going scoreless with two PIM in three games with the Knights.
