Ducks Sign Defenseman McCarthy
The Ducks announced today the signing of defenseman Steve McCarthy to a one-year contract. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.
McCarthy, 28 (2/3/81), has appeared in 302 career NHL games, recording 17-38=55 points with 168 PIM. He played last season in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), going scoreless with 16 PIM in 18 games with Ufa Salavat Yulayev. A native of Trail, British Columbia, McCarthy last appeared in the NHL with Atlanta in 2007-08, collecting 1-6=7 points with 48 PIM in 55 games. In 2006-07, he matched a personal best in points (4-12=16) while setting a career high in assists with the Thrashers.
Originally selected by Chicago in the first round (23rd overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, McCarthy has played for the Blackhawks, Canucks and Thrashers during an eight-year NHL career. McCarthy spent his first four NHL seasons with Chicago before being acquired by Vancouver in exchange for a third-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on Aug. 22, 2005. During his first season with the Canucks in 2005-06, he was acquired by Atlanta in exchange for a fourth-round selection in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft on Mar. 9, 2006.
