A glimpse of the Ducks' future will be on display this Saturday at The Rinks - Anaheim ICE with the opening of the team's 2009 Rookie Camp. The assembled group of fresh-faced players will take part in an open practice beginning at 2 p.m. They will then travel to San Jose for three games against the Sharks rookie squad on Sept. 7-9 at Sharks Ice (all games will be played at 7 p.m.).
"The Rookie Camp presents a great opportunity to develop our prospects," said Ducks Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Murray.
Of the 20-plus players that will converge together for Rookie Camp, several intriguing prospects stand out as Ducks to keep an eye on.
Matt Beleskey - No. 39, LW
The lone player at Rookie Camp who appeared with the Ducks last season, Beleskey logged his NHL debut in two January home games against Tampa Bay and New Jersey in 2008-09. The left winger and 2006 fourth-round pick spent the majority of the year in the AHL, where he scored 35 points (fifth on the team) in 58 games for Iowa.
Matt Clark - No. 73, D
Clark (selected in the second round, 37th overall) is one of three Anaheim draft picks (along with Peter Holland and Scott Valentine) from the 2009 NHL Entry Draft coming to Rookie Camp. The 18-year-old (23 points in 63 games) helped lead his junior team, Brampton, to the most wins in their franchise history and a trip to the OHL Finals last season.
Nicolas Deschamps - No. 57, C
Anaheim's second-round pick in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft (35th overall), Deschamps enjoyed his second straight season of at least 24 goals and 65 points for Chicoutimi of the QMJHL in 2008-09. The center also added one assist in two games with Iowa (AHL) last season. He recently signed a three-year entry-level deal with the Ducks on July 16.
Guillaume Goulet - No. 51, RW
Goulet will be among a handful of tryouts at Rookie Camp for the Ducks. The 5-9 winger is coming off a breakout season with Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL, where he finished tied for fourth in the league with 45 goals to go along with 69 points.
Peter Holland - No. 74, C
The Ducks' top draft choice (15th overall) in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft and one of two first-round selections made by the team, Holland is coming to Orange County for his first Rookie Camp with the club. Holland mixes power with skill at the center position and finished second on his junior team, Guelph (OHL), in scoring with 67 points in 68 games.
Logan MacMillan - No. 46, LW
MacMillan, Anaheim's first-round pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft (19th overall), split last season between Halifax and Rimouski of the QMJHL and totaled 31 points in 43 games. The son of former NHL player Bob MacMillan, who Ducks GM once played with in Chicago, the 20-year-old has been praised for his two-way game and enters his second Rookie Camp.
Mark Mitera - No. 43, D
Another former first-round pick of the Ducks, Mitera (picked 19th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft) comes to Rookie Camp fresh off four years of play at the University of Michigan. The sturdy d-man signed a three-year entry-level deal with Anaheim in March and appeared briefly in Iowa (AHL), tallying two assists in five games to close out 2008-09.
Timo Pielmeier - No. 33, G
Acquired by the Ducks (along with Nick Bonino) from San Jose in exchange for Kent Huskins and Travis Moen at the 2009 trade deadline, Pielmeier will now get a chance to go against the Sharks in the three-game set. The 20-year-old netminder went 29-11 with a 2.64 GAA last season with Shawinigan (QMJHL) and was also on Germany's World Junior team.
Dan Sexton - No. 42, RW
Sexton is a collegiate free agent signee making his way to Rookie Camp. The 5-10 winger led Bowling Green in goals (17) and points (39) in 38 games. Those numbers also ranked him fifth in each category among Central Collegiate Hockey Association leaders.
MacGregor Sharp - No. 67, C
Sharp is another player coming to the Ducks via the college free agent route, which has historically worked out quite well for the team in the past (Andy McDonald, Chris Kunitz, Dustin Penner, etc.). The 6-1 center is coming off a season in which he finished tied for fourth in the NCAA with 50 points. He added two more points in six games with Iowa (AHL).
