|Jean-Sebastien Giguere and Todd Marchant took part in Reading is the Goal Day at Maxwell Elementary by reading to kids and taking part in a Q & A.
Reading is the Goal Day is themed around promoting literacy and the importance of education, and it began with staff members and Ducks wives Kristen Giguere and Caroline Marchant reading to individual classes and conducting question and answer sessions with the students. Later in the afternoon, Giguere and Marchant took part in a school-wide assembly in which they read to kids from the hockey-themed book Brady Brady and the Great Rink and later answered questions from various students. That was followed by Wild Wing delivering a framed autographed Ducks jersey to the school, then opening the curtains on the stage to reveal a sizeable donation of street hockey equipment from the Ducks.
Following the assembly, Giguere and Marchant delivered Reading is the Goal binders to several of the school's students to further encourage their reading.
“We’re elated that the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. Program, which includes Friday’s Reading is the Goal Day, is nearing 25,000 participating children,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant. “We’re also grateful for the support from the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, which has helped to make this program possible.”
A recipient of the statewide Celebrate Literacy Award in 2008, the Ducks were recognized by the California Reading Association (CRA) for the high regard given to the Ducks S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation & Education) program by the teachers and students from the schools in Orange, San Diego and Riverside counties where the programs are implemented. The Ducks S.C.O.R.E. program was developed in 2005 with the ultimate goal of promoting healthy living and academic excellence to all students in Southern California. S.C.O.R.E. offers free educational standards-based programs and incentives for teachers and students. It also participates in the educational needs of its community by sending the team’s players, coaches and front office staff to schools.
Reading is the Goal, a division of the Ducks’ S.C.O.R.E. program, is a free program to all fourth-grade students in Southern California and is made possible by the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. The mission of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation is to facilitate and support programs that produce positive change for children and families throughout Southern California by providing educational opportunities, broadening access to the sport of hockey and addressing the health and wellness needs of our community. The program rewards students for their time spent reading per day within a 30-day period. Its goals are to convey the importance of reading as the foundation to success and to begin cultivating a love for reading amongst the participants in the program.
