Giguere Re-Injures Groin

Sunday, 10.25.2009 / 4:30 PM / News
Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere indicated Sunday afternoon that he did re-injure his groin during last night's 6-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Honda Center. Giguere, who had been hampered by a groin strain in the days leading up to the game, got the start and gave up five goals in the defeat. The last was a shot from the blue line by Fedor Tyutin that eluded Giguere and gave Columbus a 5-4 lead with 3:22 left in the game. Giguere went down in pain after the goal and left the game, to be replaced in net by Jonas Hiller.

"I didn’t see the puck until the last second, and when I saw it, I threw my leg out and my groin let go," Giguere said of the goal.  "That’s what happened when I hurt it before, and that made it worse."

Giguere said he didn't not think he would be available to play in tomorrow night's game against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs at Honda Center. "I think I need to give it a couple of days of rest and see what’s going to happen," he said. "We’re not too concerned about it, but I think yesterday was a bit of a lesson that you’ve got to give it time and make sure it’s ready. We have great trainers who know what they’re doing and right now I don’t foresee this being a problem. "

Ducks coach Randy Carlyle did not immediately indicate whether the Ducks would call up Justin Pogge from their ECHL affiliate in Bakersfield to replace Giguere. Pogge was recalled last Wednesday in case Giguere couldn't suit up for that night's game with Dallas, and was reassigned later in the day when Giguere was cleared to play.

"We haven’t made a decision yet, depending on how Giguere feels tomorrow morning," Carlyle said Sunday about recalling Pogge. "Obviously he had trouble finishing the game last night, tweaked his groin, and we’ll have to see. I’m sure Pogge will be sitting by the phone waiting to see what we do."
