Ducks Sign Defenseman Mat Clark

Wednesday, 03.31.2010 / 5:59 PM / News
The Ducks have signed defenseman Mat Clark to a three-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, no terms of the deal were disclosed. The three-year contract begins with the start of next season (2010-11).

Clark, 19 (10/17/90), is currently competing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) Playoffs with the Brampton Battalion. In six postseason contests thus far, Clark has scored 2-4=6 points with a +2 rating and nine penalty minutes (PIM), leading all club defensemen in scoring. The Battalion advanced to the second round of the OHL Playoffs yesterday with a 5-2 victory over the Kingston Frontenacs. The club will now face Barrie in the Eastern Conference Semifinals beginning tomorrow (Apr. 1). The 6-3, 211-pound blueliner scored 7-16=23 points with 88 PIM in 66 contests during his second OHL regular season. He won the Battalion’s defenseman of the year award, leading all club blueliners in goals and ranking second in points. Following the regular season, Clark was voted the Best Body Checker and Best Defensive Defenseman in the OHL’s Eastern Conference coaches’ poll. All seven of Clark’s goals this season came on the power play.

Selected by Anaheim in the second round (37th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Clark appeared in 63 contests with Brampton in his first OHL season, scoring 3-20=23 points with 91 PIM. The Lakewood, Colorado native ranked tied for sixth among OHL rookie defensemen in scoring (third on his club). Clark helped the Battalion to the 2009 OHL Final, where the club fell to Windsor in five games. In 129 career OHL regular season games, Clark has scored 10-36=46 points with 179 PIM.
