Canada Eliminated by Russia

Thursday, 05.20.2010 / 5:18 PM / News
Close to three months after winning gold at the Vancouver Olympics, Canada is walking away empty-handed at the 2010 IIHF World Championships after being eliminated by Russia with a 5-2 loss in the quarterfinals.

Canada finished the tournament in seventh place, the nation's worst showing at the Worlds since 1992. The club had made it to at least the semifinal round every year since 2002, winning six medals (three gold, three silver) in that span.

Thursday's outcome was the exact opposite of when Canada and Russia last met, in the quarterfinals of the Olympics. In that game, it was all Team Canada, who eliminated the Russians with a lopsided 7-3 victory.

Russia, seeking its third straight IIHF World title, was not to be outdone in this one. Getting goals from Maxim Afinogenov, Pavel Datsyuk, Evgeni Malkin and Sergei Federov, the Russians was up 4-0 before John Tavares was able to finally get Canada on the board with 6:08 left in the game.

Malkin would follow shortly later with his second goal of the game before Canada's Matt Duchene closed the scoring with 14 seconds left in the contest. After winning their first two games in Germany, the Canadians closed out the tournament with four losses in five games (including three straight losses).

Ducks forward Corey Perry went scoreless in 18:24 of ice time for Canada. The lone player on Canada to have also played at the Olympics, Perry finished the tournament with two goals, four assists and six points in seven games.
