Checking in with Bob Murray

Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray spoke Thursday afternoon about a number of topics, including the Ducks' new hire, plans for this weekend's draft and more.

On talks with Bobby Ryan
We made him a pretty good five-year offer, between $20-25 million. I’m not going to tell you where, but between there. That is not chump change. I would think that Don Meehan, his agent, and David McNab will have a discussion. We’re all in the same place here.

We’re going to do what is right for the organization. I’m in no hurry whatsoever. If somebody to give him an offer sheet, we have lots of space. We’ll match.

On new assistant coach Mike Foligno

He did really well years ago with Colorado and I think it broke his heart when they gave the job to somebody else at the time. He wanted to come back. I think this was the right time and he’s really passionate. It’s really going to work well with our forwards.

On using either of the two first-round picks in trade talks
Every year, you always try to move up and do something. I don’t think I’m getting far with the 12. The other one, the 29th pick, I have entertained thoughts of doing something else. I’m nowhere near anything, by the way.

On looking for defensemen
We’re working on it. We have to transition over without Scotty. There are people and things you try to do. It’s important obviously. Our defense has taken another big hit. We definitely have to try to do something there.

I’m sitting with [Ducks Director of Amateur Scouting] Martin Madden right now. We’re coming back from L.A., where we did some interviews. There are certain places where you’d like to move up and how much you have to pay to get certain people like those defensemen in the top grouping. I like our group of young defensemen coming. I’m really happy and excited about it. The bad part is we have some good, young forwards in our organization and the defensemen aren’t quite ready to jump in and I’m not going to hurry them.

On holding onto the 12th pick
Right now I am. But as with anything, and what Brian said for years, if the right deal comes along and it makes your organization and team better, you’re going to do it. That is our job. Right now, I’m pretty committed to using that pick.

On teams that have approached him on his first-round picks
There is always lots of talk. It’s more about the 29th pick than the 12th right now.

On adding more picks potentially
This is an opportunity, just like the trade deadline, to make some changes to your team and do some things. We don’t have a third or a fourth right now. Would I like to get my scouts more picks? Yeah, definitely I would. We also have two firsts at the moment. I’d like to try, but I don’t foresee it at the moment.

On possibly moving down in the draft
We’ve done that before. For example, we moved down with the Philadelphia pick and ended up getting Kyle Palmieri. Part of moving down last year is we got Mat Clark, who ended up becoming part of the Chris Pronger deal. We like Mat Clark very much. It’s worked for us before, so maybe we’ll try it again if it presents itself. It depends who is on the board when you go to do that.

On the salary cap going up to $59.4 million
I expected it. The Canadian dollar had a huge effect on the revenues. The Canadian dollar had a good year. We’ll transition into it. It is what it is.

On free agent James Wisniewski
I talked to Bill Zito, his agent, the other day. We’re going to have coffee when I get back to Chicago next week.
