To start off their second day at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, the Ducks selected Devante Smith-Pelly with the 42nd overall pick.

A 6-0, 211-pound right winger out of Mississauga of the OHL, Smith-Pelly totaled 29 goals and 62 points in 60 games played in 2009-10. His style of play seems to be one that would fit well in Anaheim.

"I’m a power forward, a two-way player and a guy who likes to finish all his checks," Smith-Pelly said. "I can play any kind of role the coach asks."

Though he had to endure one extra day to hear his name called, the Scarborough, Ontario native was just as excited to be joining an NHL organization. Once of several second-round picks In attendance at Staples Center, Smith-Pelly quickly slipped on a Ducks jersey following his selection.

"It was a different feeling," said Smith-Pelly, who also had a plus-27 rating to his credit last season. "I was really happy. There is nothing like hearing your name called. It’s an amazing feeling.

"There were rumblings maybe I could go late in the first round. When I started seeing guys being taken who weren’t really projected that high, I thought maybe it was more realistic. When my name wasn’t called, it was okay. It’s another day. Either way, I’m getting drafted."

Smith-Pelly is also familiar with the Ducks first two selections of the draft, Cam Fowler (12th overall) and Emerson Etem (29th overall) and is eager to get to play alongside them at upcoming Anaheim camps.

"I played with (Cam Fowler) at the prospect camp," Smith-Pelly said. "We hung out a little bit there and I know Emerson Etem as well. I’m glad I’m going to a team where I’m pretty familiar with the draft picks."
