Murray Discusses First Day of Free Agency

Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray spoke about the day in an afternoon conference call on Thursday. The following is a transcript:
On Toni Lydman
Toni Lydman is a third or fourth defenseman, who eats up minutes and does everything well. He plays power play, penalty killing and is a real solid two-way defenseman, which we needed desperately. He is a good player and a good citizen.
On Teemu Selanne’s status after signing Saku Koivu
I don’t know yet. I still think Teemu is thinking. Obviously, they have the same agent. We’ll see what the next couple of days bring.
On Saku Koivu
Last night, I had thought I lost Saku for sure. I just thought it didn’t sound right. They were going to look at some other numbers and had every right to. That didn’t bother me. I just didn’t think it was going to happen with the lack of centermen out there. I don’t it hurt (signing Lydman). I’ve been very straight with Saku about my plans and intentions for the hockey team. We’ve had some really good talks over the last month and a half.
On Bobby Ryan
We increased our offer yesterday on Bobby Ryan. We went to five years at $5 million a year. I’m thinking after what I heard him say last week that that would be very close. We also offered a four-year deal at a lower number and they flat out turned that down as quick as you can say it.
On more talks with Ryan
Not in the foreseeable future from my standpoint. As I said before, I offered Bobby Ryan five years at $5 million yesterday. He said no quickly. I offered him a four-year deal, he said no quickly. Basically, that situation is nowhere. As you recall, Bobby stated that he would like to be just under Getzlaf and Perry. Well, five at five is just under those guys.
On James Wisniewski
I had coffee with his agent, Bill Zito, yesterday. We’ve talked about a few other things. I expect we’ll go to arbitration.
On his intentions for the hockey team
We’re going to continue and see what Teemu does. Maybe if the numbers come into line a little better, we’ll try to get another defenseman. As you can see by the numbers today, they are way out there at this moment in time. And for tough guys by the way.
On discussing the captaincy with Koivu
No and it won’t. I’ve answered this one before. We’ll see what happens in training camp before we talk about a captain.
On being close to any other deals
Nothing big. I have to talk to Teemu. That is the next step tomorrow or sometime. I have some little things, depth things for my minor league team. I have a whole bunch of things out there on that right now because I believe in that. I don’t know if I’ll succeed in any of it. There are a lot of things out there on that. There were a lot of contingency plans if Saku did not re-sign with us. I had really started working on that. Now, I have informed all the other people that those things are done.
On being surprised on the amount of money being given to d-men
No. I would have liked to wait another day on Toni or others, but when I saw where the numbers were going I said ‘Oh boy, if I’m going to get any quality defensemen like him, I better go now.' So, I did.
