Ducks Obtain Chaput, Kennedy from Carolina

TheDucks announced on Tuesday that they have acquired center Stefan Chaput and right wing Matt Kennedy from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for center Ryan Carter.

Chaput, 22 (3/11/88), has played in 20 games with Charlotte this season, Carolina’s primary American Hockey League affiliate (AHL), recording three assists with nine penalty minutes (PIM). He was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (153rd overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-0, 192-pound forward scored 10-28=38 points with 18 PIM with Albany (AHL) last season.
 
A native of Montreal, Quebec, Chaput played four seasons (2004-07) in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) before turning professional, scoring 71=97=168 points with 145 PIM in 196 career games (Lewiston). He won the 2007 QMJHL championship and advanced to the Memorial Cup in 2007. He signed a three-year contract with the Hurricanes on Apr. 16, 2008.

Kennedy, 21 (3/4/89), has played in eight games with Charlotte this season, recording one assist with six PIM. With Barrie of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) last season (2009-10), Kennedy had 15 points (9-6=15) with a +13 rating in 17 playoff games, leading the club to the OHL Finals. He was also named to the 2010 OHL All-Star Game, scoring a goal in the contest.

A native of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Kennedy was drafted by Carolina in the fifth round (131st overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. In 2008-09 with Guelph (OHL), he was the team captain and club leader in goals (33) and points (73). The 6-2, 202-pound right wing had 151 points (79-72=151) with 336 PIM in 231 career regular season OHL games.

Carter, 27 (8/3/83), appeared in 18 contests for the Ducks this season, scoring 1-2=3 points with 22 PIM. Signed as a free agent on July 12, 2006, Carter has appeared in 138 career NHL games over four seasons with Anaheim, earning 12-17=29 points with 141 PIM. He made his NHL debut in the 2007 Stanley Cup Playoffs, playing in four contests for the Ducks en route to Anaheim’s first Stanley Cup championship. The White Bear Lake, MN native has played in 20 Stanley Cup Playoff contests in his career, collecting 2-3=5 points with six PIM.
