Saturday, 06.25.2011 / 12:00 PM / News
Selecting for the second time in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, the Ducks picked center William Karlsson.

The 6-0, 163-pounder played with Vasteras Jr. of the Swedish junior league. In 38 games, he totaled 20 goals and 54 points. In the final Central Scouting rankings, Karlsson was 21st overall among European skaters.

Anaheim also had two picks in the third round and went with center Joseph Cramarossa with the first of those (acquired in the James Wisniewski trade) at 65 overall. Cramarossa was a teammate of Ducks prospect Devante Smith-Pelly with the Mississauga St. Michael's in 2010-11. In 59 games played, he registered 32 points and 101 PIM.

Later in the third round of the draft at pick No. 83, the Ducks went for a defenseman for the first time at this year's draft with the selection of Andy Welinski. Ranked 48th among North American skaters, Welinski played with Green Bay of the USHL in 2010-11 and totaled 14 points in 51 games played. He has committed to play at  Minnesota-Duluth, the 2011 NCAA Division I champion, next season.

The Ducks did not have a draft pick in the fourth round, as it had been traded to Montreal in a December 2009 trade for Kyle Chipchura. Anaheim returned in the fifth round to choose left winger Max Friberg with the 143rd overall selection. Playing for Skovde in the Swedish third division, Friberg put together 40 points in 34 games. He was ranked 13th overall among European skaters by Central Scouting.

It appeared as though the Ducks would be done at draft, with both their sixth and seventh round choices having been dealt already in previous trade. But Ducks Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray executed another deal with Toronto and obtained the 160th overall pick in the sixth round for a 2012 sixth-round choice. With pick No. 160 - Anaheim selected defenseman Josh Manson, who has played the past two seasons with the Salmon Arm SilverBacks of the BCHL.
