Ducks to Host Hockey Fights Cancer Night
The Ducks will host Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night tomorrow (Oct. 21) vs. Dallas at Honda Center (7:05 p.m.). Each October serves as the NHL’s Hockey Fights Cancer (HFC) month. On Friday night, the Ducks will recognize/raise funds for HFC Awareness Night in many ways. For the second consecutive year, the local beneficiary is the Orange County/Inland Empire chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

Throughout the game (and month of October), fans can text “HFC” to “90999” for a one-time $5 donation to LLS. An in-game silent auction of Ducks autographed merchandise will take place on the concourse near Section 213 with all proceeds donated to LLS. Sara Blake, wife of Ducks left wing and cancer survivor Jason Blake, will sell “Wrap and Remember” bracelets for $45 (plus tax) at Section 212 throughout the game. With every purchase of a bracelet, Sara and her business partner Amy Oh will donate a portion of the proceeds to LLS. Both Jason Blake and center Saku Koivu have been personally affected by leukemia and lymphoma. With the purchase of a “Wrap and Remember” bracelet, each patron will receive a photo autographed by Blake and Koivu. Koivu will also participate in a ceremonial puck drop at center ice.

Ducks coaches, management, broadcasters and staff will wear official lavender HFC ties and lavender ribbons. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive an HFC lavender ribbon. In addition, players’ hockey sticks will be wrapped in lavender hockey tape. A selection of the hockey sticks will be available in an online auction following the game. Ducks players will also be wearing HFC lavender decals on their helmets in support of the cause. Lavender, which represents awareness for all types of cancers, is the designated color for the HFC initiative.

LLS representatives will take part in the evening’s in-game activities such as the Zamboni rider, Honorary Duck, Honorary Power Player, Honorary Stick Boy and Honorary Broadcaster. In addition, the Ducks will recognize an individual dedicated to LLS through the Community Hero Award. Daniel Wu, this year’s recipient, began his involvement with LLS last year after his wife, Anita, lost her battle with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia on February 6, 2010. In Anita’s memory, Wu devotes his time to help raise funds to find cures for blood cancers. In 2011, he raised over $78,000 for the LLS “Man & Woman of the Year” campaign, and won the title of “Man of the Year” for the Orange County/Inland Empire chapter.

Hockey Fights Cancer is a joint initiative founded in December 1998 by the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA). It is supported by NHL member clubs, NHL alumni, the NHL Officials’ Association, Professional Hockey Athletic Trainers and Equipment Managers, corporate marketing partners, broadcast partners and fans throughout North America. To date, HFC has raised more than $12 million to support national and local cancer research institutions, children’s hospitals, player charities and local cancer organizations.

The mission of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS has dedicated itself to being one of the top-rated voluntary health agencies in terms of dollars that directly fund their mission.
