The Ducks will welcome more than 15,000 elementary students (grades 3-6) for the 12th annual First Flight Field Trip on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Honda Center. This award-winning learning program, entitled “Mind, Body and Goal,” will work with children to discover the important connection between body and brain. The program begins at 8 a.m. with over 50 hands-on exhibits and an interactive exposition area for students to explore in the Honda Center parking lot. At 10:45 a.m., the field trip will shift inside Honda Center for the on-ice segment, featuring a skills competition with all Anaheim Ducks players.

“We look forward to once again turning Honda Center into an oversized classroom,” said Ducks Director of Fan Development Matt Savant. “First Flight is a fantastic way to expose local students to the sport of hockey, while providing them with a one-of-a-kind and very entertaining learning experience.”

The First Flight Field Trip is a unique educational experience that transforms Honda Center into an interactive classroom. As the Anaheim Ducks practice on the ice, students will refer to a workbook which explores how the team prepares to play hockey at an elite level. Children will learn how much sleep players require for peak performance, why “brain food” helps with the ability to memorize hockey plays, and how players work to improve reaction time on the ice. Both live and taped segments from Ducks players and coaches will appear on the HondaVision scoreboard during practice, which will help to reveal answers to workbook questions. The program will conclude with an exciting skills competition, dividing the crowd in half, with each group cheering on either Team White (aka Team Right Brain) or Team Black (aka Team Left Brain) in the various events. Skills featured in the competition include educational twists on hardest shot, shooting accuracy, fastest skater, obstacle relay and trick shot.

In addition, the Ducks have teamed with community organizations to present hands-on exhibits that supplement lessons found in the First Flight workbook. From 8-10:30 a.m., the students will have the opportunity to participate in activity points that help to demonstrate the “Mind, Body and Goal” theme in the Honda Center parking lot. The Orange County Department of Education, Cal State Fullerton (CSUF) and the Ocean Institute have joined the Ducks in creating a more enriching program for all students in attendance.

Recognized as an educational event for all ages by the California State Assembly and as a contributor to informal education by the National Science Teachers' Association, the First Flight Field Trip’s curriculum has been designed to meet the state's educational content standards for grades 3-6. Completely free to participating schools and students, First Flight is a facet of the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education) Program which was developed in 2005. The goal of the program is to promote and cultivate healthy living and academic excellence to all students in Southern California.
