Ducks Acquire O'Marra from Oilers

The Ducks have acquired center Ryan O’Marra from the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for defenseman Bryan Rodney.

O’Marra, 24 (6/9/87), has appeared in 40 contests with the Oklahoma City Barons of the American Hockey League (AHL) this season, scoring 8-9=17 points with 58 penalty minutes (PIM). Born in Tokyo, Japan and raised in Mississauga, Ontario, O’Marra’s +15 rating currently ranks second on the club. The 6-2, 193-pound centerman also appeared in seven NHL contests with Edmonton this season, scoring 0-1=1 point with four PIM.

Selected by the New York Islanders in the first round (15th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, O’Marra won gold with Team Canada at both the 2006 and 2007 IIHF World Junior Championships. Acquired by Edmonton with Robert Nilsson and a 2007 first-round draft pick (Alex Plante) in exchange for Ryan Smyth on Feb. 27, 2007, O’Marra went on to make his NHL debut with the Oilers on Nov. 29, 2009 vs. San Jose. He scored his first career goal the following season on Dec. 26, 2010 at Vancouver. In 31 NHL contests with Edmonton from 2009-12, O’Marra has collected 1-6=7 points with 17 PIM. He has also appeared in 268 career AHL contests, scoring 29-52=81 points with 250 PIM. O’Marra registered a career-high four points (all assists) on Nov. 7, 2010 with Oklahoma City vs. the Toronto Marlies.

Rodney, 27 (4/22/84), has appeared in 41 contests with Syracuse (AHL) this season, scoring 5-15=20 points with 10 PIM. Signed by Anaheim as a free agent on July 5, 2011, Rodney has played in 280 career AHL contests with Hartford (2005-06), Albany (2007-10), Charlotte (2010-11) and Syracuse (2011-12), scoring 29-127=156 points with 140 PIM. The London, Ontario native also appeared in 33 career NHL contests with Carolina from 2008-11, notching 1-12=13 points with 12 PIM. O’Marra will report to Syracuse, Anaheim’s primary development affiliate in the AHL.
