Ducks to Host Shea Center Night Sunday vs. Chicago

The Therapeutic Riding Center in San Juan Capistrano will serve as Sunday’s Highlighted Nonprofit Organization

Friday, 02.24.2012 / 10:56 PM / News
The Ducks will highlight The Shea Center this Sunday (Feb. 26) when the club takes on the Chicago Blackhawks at Honda Center (note special 4:05 p.m. start time). The therapeutic riding center, located in San Juan Capistrano, is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities through horse-related programs. Throughout the game, fans will have the opportunity to learn more about The Shea Center through recognition of a community hero and other in-game elements, including a ceremonial puck presentation. In addition, proceeds from all Ducks-autographed items available in Sunday’s in-game silent auction (Section 213) will benefit The Shea Center (through the Anaheim Ducks Foundation).

Following warm-ups (approx. 3:45 p.m.), the Ducks will recognize Shea volunteer Jim Washburn with the Community Hero Award. Washburn has volunteered at The Shea Center since 2007 and has donated thousands of hours as a riding lesson instructor and physical therapy volunteer. In addition, the Ducks will also highlight The Shea Center with a ceremonial puck presentation. Shea Center rider Paul Fischer (9 yrs. old), who has been training at The Shea Center for five years, will receive a special ceremonial puck on the ice from Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf. Children who ride at The Shea Center will also take part in in-game elements such as Zamboni riders and Honorary Duck, Stick Boy and Power Player opportunities.

Sunday’s in-game silent auction will benefit The Shea Center. Available items include a player-autographed Anaheim Ducks puck set, a 2011-12 team-autographed jersey and stick, as well as an autographed stick by 2011 NHL Hart Trophy-winner (MVP) Corey Perry. Fans are encouraged to stop by Section 213 any time after doors open (2:30 p.m.) to place bids on the Ducks merchandise available. The silent auction will close following the second intermission.

With more than 200 weekly volunteers and just 12 full-time staff, The Shea Center’s focus is on helping children and adults with special needs increase the strength, balance, independence and self-esteem of the more than 500 clients seen each year. Based on horse-related activities, The Shea Center offers physical, occupational and speech therapy services in a unique equestrian environment.
