Vanessa Lam of The Rinks Figure Skating Program Competing at Junior Worlds in Belarus

Sixteen-year-old Vanessa Lam of THE RINKS figure skating program is currently competing for Team USA at the 2012 ISU Junior World Championships in Minsk, Belarus. As one of 207 skaters from 52 countries, Lam will compete in the ladies short program and free style this Friday, Mar. 2 in Belarus. The Bellflower, CA resident trains at Anaheim ICE and Westminster ICE, both operated by the Anaheim Ducks.
Lam was recently honored at the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships as a member of the Scholastic Honors Team. Currently a junior at Downey High School, Lam manages to maintain a 4.8 grade-point-average in addition to her vigorous training. A 2011 Junior Grand Prix finalist, Lam was the only U.S. junior lady to compete in the tournament, where she placed fifth. She advanced to the Junior Grand Prix Final by winning Gold at the qualifying round in Austria (Sept. 30) and Bronze at the qualifying round in Australia (Sept. 10). Lam skates under the direction of former World and Olympic Team Coach Doug Chapman, as well as 1975 World Ladies Champion and 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist (a two-time Olympian) Dianne De Leeuw.
Lam picked up gold at the Junior Grand Prix in October 2010 in the Czech Republic, the first of her three Junior Grand Prix medals to date. She began skating at age five and became one of the youngest skaters in U.S. Figure Skating history to pass her Senior test (age 11). She was also the youngest skater competing at the Junior Level at the 2009 U.S. National Championships (age 13). She highlighted her first Senior year by finishing in the top six in the Short Program at the 2011 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, NC.
With THE RINKS Development Program presented by Honda launch in February 2009, the Ducks now operate five local skating facilities: two ice rinks and three inline facilities. Irvine Inline, the most recent addition, joined the program in Sept. 2011, while Westminster ICE was added in August 2009. The two facilities join original locations in Anaheim (THE RINKS - Anaheim ICE), Corona (THE RINKS - Corona Inline) and Huntington Beach (THE RINKS - Huntington Beach Inline). In addition to youth and adult hockey programs, Anaheim ICE and Westminster ICE offer figure skating, a learn-to-skate program, broomball, curling and public skating.
