PAC-8 Championship to be held at The Rinks - Anaheim Ice in 2013

The PAC-8 Hockey Conference has officially selected the host teams of its Championship Weekend for the next two seasons, with the University of Southern California hosting in 2013, and the University of Utah tapped for 2014.

The 2012-13 PAC-8 season will wrap up in Anaheim on February 8-9, 2013. The Rinks – Anaheim ICE, home rink for the USC Trojans, will be the site of the post-season tournament. Anaheim ICE is also the official practice facility of the Ducks, who will also be heavily involved with the event, providing promotional and logistical support.

“We’re honored to be the host of next season’s tournament,” said USC’s team president and assistant captain Luke Walker. “Our program has developed tremendously since we last hosted the PAC-8s [in 2010], especially in developing our relationship with the Anaheim Ducks and working with them to highlight the sport of hockey in Southern California. Hosting this tournament in Orange County will be a boon to that effort.”

The road through the 2013-2014 season will lead to Salt Lake City, UT on February 7-8, 2014. The Utah Utes will host the tournament at the Salt Lake City Sports Complex, which was the official training facility during the 2002 Winter Olympics. The Utes will benefit from the experience of the Utah Sports Commission, formerly the Olympic Organizing Committee.

“Utah has already made their mark since joining the PAC-8 this past season, finishing in 2nd place and representing the PAC-8 in the ACHA playoffs,” said Johnny Nguyen, the PAC-8 executive director-elect since February 11, 2012 and who formally took over the position on June 1. “They’ve been tremendous and gracious members of the league, and as our conference grows in size and strength, the executive committee felt it was necessary to add stability by scheduling the tournament two seasons out.”

The PAC-8 typically selects the tournament site at the prior annual league meeting.

“University of Utah Hockey must first thank the Executive Committee for giving us this opportunity,” said Utah president & general manager AJ Boldan. “We are all here to grow the sport of college hockey and we look forward to bringing the PAC-8 Tournament to the ‘State of Sport.’”

The host of the PAC-8 Tournament receives an automatic bid to face off against the other top 3 teams. The tournament is played over two days, with semifinal games played on Friday, and the consolation and championship games on Saturday. About the PAC-8 Conference
The Intercollegiate PAC-8 Hockey Conference (PAC-8) is an association of collegiate affiliated programs that provides structure, regulates operations, and promotes quality and sportsmanship in collegiate ice hockey. Member teams include University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Oregon, University of Southern California, Stanford University, University of Utah, University of Washington, and Washington State University. The PAC-8 is affiliated with the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), the national governing body of non-varsity collegiate hockey. All ACHA teams are recognized by USA Hockey.
