Ducks Select Hampus Lindholm with Sixth Overall Pick in 2012 Draft
The Ducks selected defenseman Hampus Lindholm with the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft at Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
 
“Hampus is a complete defenseman who plays with poise and passion,” said Executive Vice President/General Manager Bob Murray. “We were thrilled to have the opportunity to select him at sixth overall this evening.”

Lindholm, 18 (1/20/94), appeared in 28 games with Rogle BK of the Swedish Division 2 league last season, scoring 1-3=4 points. In 10 playoff games, Lindholm posted 1-4=5 points to help the club clinch a spot in the Swedish Elite League next season. Lindholm also played 28 games for Rogle Jr. in 2011-12, compiling 5-12=17 points.

"I'm very happy," Lindholm said. "I had meetings with the Ducks and had a feeling they might pick me."
 
A native of Helsingborg, Sweden, Lindholm played extensive minutes as a member of the top defensive pairing for Sweden at the 2012 Under-18 World Championship in the Czech Republic. The 6-2, 196-pound blueliner appeared in six games for the silver medal-winning team, earning 0-4=4 points with four penalty minutes (PIM).

A short time after he was selected with the sixth overall pick by Anaheim, Lindholm spoke to local reports via a conference call from Pittsburgh. The following is a transcript:

On his feeling after being drafted by the Ducks
I had talked with Anaheim before, so I knew they were interested. I didn’t know they were going to pick me so early. They said I should go between 10 and 15. Anaheim is a good team. It’s going to be fun. It was happy moment to be picked sixth.

It was a very good experience. I wasn’t ready for it because I didn’t know I was going to be picked so early. Anaheim, I had talked with them before. I love the guys there, all the scouts and executives. It was a happy feeling that came to me. I hugged my parents and my agent. I’m very proud to be a part of the Anaheim. It’s a good team I think and some good years are going to come in the future.

On his style of play
I see myself like Kenny Jonsson. He’s my defense coach now. I like to compare myself with him. I’m pretty calm on the ice when I play. I’m pretty big and a good skater. I’m like a leader on the ice you could say. I’m a professional teammate and always on time. I’m very calm and down to Earth. That is pretty much me.

On when he thinks he could reach the NHL
That’s a hard question to answer. If I had to say, I have one year left with Rogle in the Elite League. I’ll be a good defenseman in the Elite League and then after that we will see. Probably one more year of being a top defenseman in the Elite League, play real well and then go over. It’s hard to say. We’ll see what happens.

On any previous knowledge of the Ducks
I loved the guys in the organization. The scouts were pretty nice. I knew some players in the organization. I have never been to California. I know it’s a pretty hot place, but nothing more.

On his parents reaction to him being drafted
My dad is pretty calm and was saying thank you. He was pretty happy. My mom was also excited, but she shows it more. They were proud of me.

On doing well in the endurance tests at the combine
I have a real good summer coach back home. His name is Andreas Larsson. He has been my skate coach since the age of 15. He’s a real good coach, so I have to thank him. He is someone who made me real strong and improved me.
