Season Overview
Saku Koivu skated in his 16th NHL season (third with the Ducks) during the 2011-12 season. The center continued to be a fixture on the second forward line, alongside fellow Finn and friend Teemu Selanne.

The veteran totaled 11 goals, 27 assists and 38 points in 74 games during last year’s campaign. For the second straight season, Koivu led Anaheim in faceoff percentage (52.4 percent, ranking 31st overall among league leaders). He also led the team in faceoff wins (646) and was second in faceoff attempts (1,233).

Koivu’s average of 18:07 of ice time per game ranked fourth among team forwards, while his 24.5 shifts per game were second overall on the team (behind only Francois Beauchemin’s 25.9) A strong two-way player throughout his career, the center tied for first on Anaheim with 35 takeaways. His plus-seven rating was good for second on the Ducks roster.

Highlight
Koivu’s hat trick on Jan. 10 against the Stars was among the highlights from Anaheim’s 2011-12 season. The three-goal game was his first with the Ducks and the second of his career, with the other coming on Nov. 18, 2002 with Montreal against Pittsburgh. It was the second hat trick in as many games for Anaheim, as Corey Perry had also performed the feat two nights earlier. In all, he became the 12th different Duck to score a hat trick and 36th time total.

By the Numbers
1,012, career games Koivu has played in the NHL since making his debut with Montreal during the 1995-96 season. The center eclipsed the mark during a game at Colorado on March 12. He is now one of 279 players in league history to have at least played in 1,000 career games. During his 16 seasons of play, Koivu has totaled 236 goals, 540 assists and 776 points thus far.

Looking Forward
Questions on whether Koivu would return to the Ducks or even the NHL next in 2012-13 were answered quickly when the 37-year-old agreed to a one-year contract with Anaheim on May 9. With Selanne also back on board, it would appear that the duo will once again anchor the second line. Koivu should also continue to see ample time in the faceoff circle and on the penalty kill for the Ducks.

Personal
Beginning in 2006, Koivu was voted into an eight-year commission term on the International Olympic Committee’s  Athletes’ Commission. Recently, members from that group had the opportunity to run with the Olympic torch during the lead-up to the London Summer Games. He has participated in several international competitions for Finland, including four Olympics (1994, 1998, 2006, 2010, winning medals in each).

Koivu resides in his hometown of Turku, Finland during the offseason. Saku and his wife have two children: daughter Ilona and son Aatos. He enjoys taking bike rides with his kids, watching movies and going out for nice dinners. Lists U2, Live, Bruce Springsteen and Finnish singer Lauri Tahka as his favorite musicians.
