Vanessa Lam of THE RINKS Ice Figure Skating Program to Compete in Junior Grand Prix Event Next Week

The Native of Bellflower Will Represent Team USA in Courcheval, France

The Anaheim Ducks announced today that 17-year-old figure skater Vanessa Lam will compete in next week’s International Skating Union (ISU) Junior Grand Prix of Figure Skating event in France. A native of Bellflower, Calif., Lam will compete for Team USA in Courcheval, France from Aug. 23-25 in the Junior Ladies program. Lam currently trains at Anaheim ICE and Westminster ICE, both operated by the Anaheim Ducks as part of THE RINKS Development Program presented by Honda.

A two-time gold medalist on the Junior Grand Prix circuit, Lam was a 2011 Junior Grand Prix finalist by winning gold at the qualifying round in Austria (Sept. 30, 2011) and bronze at the Australia qualifier (Sept. 10, 2011). She also picked up gold at the Junior Grand Prix in October 2010 in the Czech Republic, the first of her three Junior Grand Prix medals to date. Lam opened her 2012-13 season with a first-place finish at the Hidden Valley Open in Escondido, Calif. before winning the Senior Ladies Freeskating event at the 2012 Glacier Falls Summer Classic at THE RINKS – Anaheim ICE in early August.

Entering her senior year at Downey High School this fall, Lam skates under the direction of former World and Olympic Team Coach Doug Chapman, as well as 1975 World Ladies Champion and 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist (a two-time Olympian) Dianne De Leeuw-Chapman. She began skating at age five and became one of the youngest skaters in U.S. Figure Skating history to pass her Senior test (age 11). She was also the youngest skater competing at the Junior Level at the 2009 U.S. National Championships (age 13). She highlighted her first Senior year by finishing in the top six in the Short Program at the 2011 U.S. Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

With THE RINKS Development Program presented by Honda launch in February 2009, the Ducks operate six local skating facilities: three ice rinks and three inline facilities.
