More than 800 men, women, boys and girls competed on 92 teams in the 6th annual Give Blood Play Hockey Charity Tournament on November 2-4 THE RINKS – Irvine Inline. Proceeds from the event, which was hosted at The Rinks – Irvine Inline presented by Honda, benefited CHOC Children’s (CHOC).

Mobile blood units were onsite during the three-day event for individuals who wished to donate blood during the three-day tournament, and 242 pints of blood were collected. That topped the 205 from last year, as 1,037 pints have been collected since the tournament's inception. The 1000th donation was given by a Mr. Jason Alexander, who had a rare blood type that can be given directly to premature babies. 

Gross proceeds for the weekend -- which included team registration fees, raffles, food and corporate donations totaled just over $92,000. To date, the Give Blood Play Hockey tournament has donated approximately $250,000 to CHOC, with the goal of funding a medication station at the hospital. The event has already provided funds for a hospital room in the new Oncology wing at CHOC, and both will bear the name of Give Blood Play Hockey.

"I could never have dreamed that so many people in the hockey community would come together to support our cause," said Mary Quayle, the tournament's founder. "It is truly an amazing event and I’m thrilled with our results this year."
