Practice Report (January 28): Ducks Get Set for San Jose

“Over the past couple of years, I’ve been working on finishing all of my checks, being a little more physical and using my bigger frame to shield the puck better in the corners. In the defensive zone I needed to work on my stopping and starting, and I did that really well this weekend, and I keep getting better at it.” - Etem

Practice shifted to THE RINKS – Anaheim ICE this morning before an afternoon flight to San Jose.

Emerson Etem and Sami Vatanen were recalled by the Ducks yesterday and both participated in practice.

ETEM UP
The talk of practice was the newest addition to the Ducks roster – Emerson Etem. The Long Beach, California native and former first-round draft pick was recalled (along with defenseman Sami Vatanen) from Norfolk of the American Hockey League. Forward Peter Holland and defenseman Jordan Hendry were reassigned to the Admirals.

Etem, 20, collected 14 points (12 goals, 2 assists) in 40 games with Norfolk at the time of his recall.

On what he’s worked to improve: “Over the past couple of years, I’ve been working on finishing all of my checks, being a little more physical and using my bigger frame to shield the puck better in the corners. In the defensive zone I needed to work on my stopping and starting, and I did that really well this weekend, and I keep getting better at it.”

On his Ducks training camp: “I thought I had a really good camp. I came in here with high expectations of myself, like I always do, and I was able to use my speed and just show what I needed to show, and it didn’t work out. But at the same time, I knew that if I got sent back [to Norfolk] I’d work as hard as possible to be back here. Now I’m here and I need to take it day by day and just work hard.”

On telling his parents of his recall: “I called them right after. They’re very happy. My mom was up there in Norfolk for the past weekend, so right after the game I told her. She was pretty stoked. I’ve got a lot of friends up there in San Jose so we’ll see what happens.”

When asked if he’s gotten word whether or not he’ll be in tomorrow’s lineup: “I know nothing (laughs). I’m literally doing this minute-by-minute here. I’m just focusing on the little things.”

BRUCE’S THOUGHTS
On Emerson Etem: “We like that we can use him at the right and left side. He’s got speed, size, strength, and can help on the PK. We want these guys to seize the opportunity. We want guys underneath to push the guys up here.”

WINNIK ON THE SHARKS
The Ducks will face their first Pacific Division opponent tomorrow night, and it happens to be a Sharks team that has yet to lose a game (5-0-0). In fact, the Sharks have outscored their opponents 23-8 over that span.

Daniel Winnik appeared in 21 games for San Jose last season after being acquired from the Colorado Avalanche at the trade deadline. Winnik went on to record five points (three goals, two assists) and shared some insight on what the Sharks bring to the table.

“They’re a good power-play team. That’s where they get a lot of their chances and that’s where they swing the momentum,” he said. “I think that if we play a disciplined game and our PK plays like it did during the last game, we should be good.

“It’ll be a good test. They’re one of the highest-scoring teams in the league and they’re beating everyone by at least two goals, so it’ll be a good first test. They’re divisional rivals, so we’ve got to come out strong.”
