Morning Skate Report: February 4
Fowler

After a day off yesterday, the Ducks were on the ice this morning in preparation for tonight’s game against the San Jose Sharks at Honda Center.

FOWLER UPDATE
Defenseman Cam Fowler was ruled out for tonight’s game with an upper-body injury. Fowler left Saturday night's 7-4 victory over the Kings early in the second period when he was run into the boards by LA forward Jarret Stoll. There was no penalty on the play and no supplemental discipline on Stoll.

“He’s not playing tonight,” said Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau. “He feels a lot better but it’s a day-to-day thing. When he’s ready to play, he’ll play.

“I don’t anticipate Cam being out for very long.”

On Jarret Stoll not getting supplemental discipline: “I was really surprised. But those things happen. I’m not in the war room talking and discussing those. I’m looking at those from my personal point of view. Sometimes they get hearings and you’re surprised, sometimes they don’t get hearings and you’re surprised. My view is that it was a hit from behind. He had a hold of his jersey and even though Cam tried to stop, he followed through with the hit. The referees couldn’t see it on the ice; they were all preoccupied. It is what it is. We’re not going to cry over spilled milk. We’ll just move on with it.”

On whether Cam’s injury is long-term and/or serious: “There’s no sense of that right now. So we’ll see as time goes on, as this week prolongs. I know, just today, that he’s not playing today.”

PALMIERI ON THE SHARKS
The Ducks take on the San Jose Sharks for the second time in less than a week. Anaheim held a 2-1 lead until late in the game when San Jose tied it and eventually won in a shootout on January 29. At the time, it was the first time San Jose was held to two goals or less through regulation and overtime. This morning, Ducks forward Kyle Palmieri gave his keys to success against the Sharks:

“Coming into last game with San Jose, we knew they had a high-powered offense and I think they were leading the league in goals. Tonight, we just need to play a smart game, make sure we’re good in the d-zone, and I think everything else will take care of itself.”

VATANEN REFLECTS
Sami Vatanen
made his NHL debut on February 1 against the Minnesota Wild and finished with a +1 rating in 13:52 time-on-ice. With Fowler out of the lineup, Vatanen skated primarily with Bryan Allen during today’s morning skate.

“I trust myself on the ice and [thought] ‘It’s just hockey,’ and you do your best and after that you can [look at yourself] in the mirror and say, ‘You did what you had to do,’” said Vatanen. “So I don’t think I was too nervous. Just enjoy the time and try to get better.”
