Ducks Sign Collegiate Standout Whitney to Two-Year Contract
The Anaheim Ducks announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed forward Steven Whitney to a two-year entry-level contract. Per club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Whitney, 22 (2/18/1991), recently completed his collegiate career with Boston College (Hockey East). He ranked second in the nation in goals, scoring a career-high 26-19=45 points in 38 contests during his senior season. On Mar. 19, Whitney was the recipient of the Walter Brown Award, awarded annually to the best American-born hockey player in New England. The Walter Brown Award, established in 1953, is the oldest nationally recognized college hockey honor. Whitney leads the nation in third-period goals (14) and his six game-winning goals in 2012-13 rank tied for third among all NCAA Division 1 players. He led the Eagles in goals and power play goals (8), while ranking second on the club in points and third in assists. Whitney helped Boston College advance to the NCAA hockey tournament, posting a 22-12-4 record in 2012-13.

A native of Reading, MA, Whitney scored 55-73=128 points in 160 career collegiate hockey games for Boston College. He was a member of the club’s NCAA Division 1 Championship team in 2011-12, earning All-Tournament honors at the Frozen Four in Tampa. He scored the Eagles’ fourth goal in the club’s Frozen Four championship game on Apr. 7, 2012 vs. Ferris State (4-1 final score). Advancing to the NCAA hockey tournament in each of his four seasons, Whitney was also a member of the 2010 NCAA Championship squad in his freshman season, a 5-0 victory in the final over Wisconsin. Whitney earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors as a sophomore in 2010-11 (Nov. 29-Dec. 5), as well as two Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors in 2009-10 (Mar. 8-14 & Dec. 7-13).
