Ducks Sign O’Brien To Three-Year Entry-Level Contract
O’Brien, 20 (11/21/92), appeared in 67 games for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) this season, scoring 2-16=18 points with a +19 rating and 113 penalty minutes (PIM). O’Brien led the team in PIM and ranked fourth in plus/minus, which led club defensemen. The Hamilton, Ontario native has also appeared in five QMJHL Playoff games this spring, going scoreless with 10 PIM in a 4-1 series victory over Drummondville. Rouyn-Noranda is scheduled to begin its seven-game quarterfinal series tonight against Quebec.
Selected by Anaheim in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, O’Brien has appeared in three QMJHL seasons with Rouyn-Noranda (2012-13) and Chicoutimi (2010-12). In 190 career QMJHL games, he has earned 11-46=57 points with a +12 rating and 241 PIM. The 6-3, 206-pound defenseman has also played 27 career QMJHL Playoff games with the Huskies and Sagueneens, scoring 2-10=12 points with 47 PIM. In 2012, O’Brien helped lead Chicoutimi to a semifinal appearance against Saint John and finished the postseason ranked second among team defensemen in scoring.
