Ducks to Host 1,000 Fifth Graders for Physical Fitness Challenge at Honda Center Next Tuesday
The Ducks will host the Fit Finals next Tuesday, Apr. 16 at Honda Center as part of its Captain’s Challenge program. Nearly 1,000 fifth grade students will participate in physical fitness activities in the parking lot in preparation for their upcoming State of California required physical fitness assessments. The fitness activities will take place from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. with a special appearance by Ducks Captain Ryan Getzlaf upon the event’s conclusion.

The Captain’s Challenge is a new initiative of the Anaheim Ducks S.C.O.R.E. Program (Scholastic Curriculum of Recreation and Education). The motivational program serves to encourage fifth grade students healthy living habits as well as prepare for the upcoming California Physical Fitness Test. In advance of Tuesday’s Fit Finals, participating schools and students received a workbook containing a month-long program that emphasizes nutrition, health-related matters, physical fitness and leadership traits. The activities in the workbook seek to empower students by teaching the virtues and characteristics of a captain when approaching daily decisions, as well as personal health and fitness.

The Captains Challenge program and Fit Finals event this Tuesday are free to schools through the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. During Tuesday’s Fit Finals, students will run one mile, complete a trunk lift, do push-ups and sit-ups and test flexibility through a sit-and-reach assessment. Students will complete the fitness activities in pre-determined groups of 200. During the month preceding the Captain’s Challenge Fit Finals, students had an opportunity to become the class captain, donning a “C” on his/her shoulder for a designated day and lead workbook activities during recess or lunch. Anaheim Ducks staff volunteers and community partners, like Asics and Pepsi will be on hand Tuesday to record student scores and create an energetic atmosphere for the Fit Finals. Getzlaf will be on hand during the closing ceremony, acknowledging the month-long effort of the students and encouraging them to continue exercising captain-like qualities.

Ducks S.C.O.R.E. offers a three-pronged approach to enrich the education of students: an in-class education program that donates 18,000 sets of school supplies and includes an incentive-based reading program (Reading is the GOAL), a science & math program (First Flight Field Trip) as well as a street hockey physical education program. S.C.O.R.E. is the primary program of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation. The mission of the Anaheim Ducks Foundation is to facilitate and support programs that produce positive change for children and families throughout Southern California by providing educational opportunities, broadening access to the sport of hockey and addressing the health and wellness needs of our community.
